No, they mean version 7.1 will expire. The new version will be 7.5 and you will need to upgrade. 7.5 is already the current version for paying customers.

I already have 7.5 Professional, I thought that they released that update to 7.1 awhile ago.

Yeah, that would be quite the scare now wouldn't it? :D

Is AVG really that effective? From my memory, AVG kept me alive during my summer camp for 4 weeks

The moment I came back home, my thinkpad began to collapse.

My main reason for using AVG Free, fact that I can afford it set aside, is because it's one of the few GOOD scanners that doesn't totally slow down my laptop which is of considerable vintage (2000). When I first saw the title of this thread, I almost had a heart attack.

As opposed to Norton's Retail scanning process, you mean; here is what I think would go on if we could see the internals in action...

*User opens Word file and Norton begins scanning*

"Searching for Viruses...Possible patterns found"

*1 minute later*

"Pattern analysis algorithms located within RAM, proceeding to hog all system resources..."

*Blinking progress bar*

"Hogging....Hogging Complete"

*Opens result log*

HDD MTBF impact due to excessive threshing: -5 days
Average CPU temperature during operation: 75°C
RAM used: 1.0001GB / 1.00GB (See PF usage)
Virus size: 5kb
HDD sapce used for quarantine of virus: 500MB
Update found, contains one new virus definition...
Downloading...(1KB of 375MB) Time Remaining: 0:10:55:30

That pretty much describes my experiences with anti-virus programs like NAV retail. :D

Ditto - already done the upgrade and works just as well as 7.1 did! :) One day when I can afford to I might go up to the Professional version as my way of saying thanks to Grisoft.

Since I switched from Norton to AVG (and Avast for a little time) I didn't have a single problem with virusses, a faster running system,... It's just a simple clean and effective AV :D .

@dsigma6: same thing happend here, really nice job by grisoft.

I just wonder--is grisoft a US-based company? Few US companies will offer free software for so long, I think.

I imagine the reason that AVG is free to consumers is because their target demographic is likely to be the enterprise market. Basically, you give a "lite" version of the software to anyone with the internet hoping that out of every how-many, there will be a few people who have power to make buying decisions in their company that like the software and decide to spend part of the corporate budget on it.

Yeah, exactly; it is called an "Incentive Version." ;) :)

Although, usually, that term is only applied to the full version being offered up until an integer change in the version numbers.

PyMol, as well as some other research software that sells to corportations and labs, does that alot. The positive externality is that it gives most home and personal users a chance to get their hands on free, professional quality software. :D

Here is what google tells us:

Grisoft Inc. is a U.S.-based company established in 1998 as a holding company for Grisoft, s.r.o., a Czech Republic-based high-tech company specializing in the development and marketing of anti-virus software for computer systems since 1990. Having successfully developed its AVG anti-virus software with exceptional heuristic capabilities, and captured over 50% market share in its home market, Grisoft is now poised to take its marketing efforts to the international anti-virus market that is expected to grow annually by 35%. Grisoft Inc.'s primary roles are to undertake marketing and sales operations on anti-virus markets outside Central Europe where its 100% owned subsidiary, Grisoft s.r.o., has been the market leader in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia for the last seven years. There are many methods for detecting viruses but AVG combines them uniquely in a completely new way as all functions make use of a single module - the heuristic emulator. Moreover, AVG anti-virus system runs under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 3.x and DOS and includes resident protection for all platforms. All versions are part of the same retail box, allowing the user to continue using AVG anti-virus software and upgrading the operating system whenever necessary. With all testing to date indicating that AVG Software is a highly competitive product utilizing both scanning and heuristic analysis in virus detection, the primary expansion target of Grisoft is the United States anti-virus market.

This is slightly off topic, but does no one use NOD32 as their primary anti-virus software? I now currently use it, and it seems by far the best anti virus, although not free...

The college subscribes to Symantec Client Security ... it doesn't really pick that much up. AVG Free is great. I stick to free software; if it isn't free I don't need that type of software. I would pay for AVG though.
