possible solution to protecting your laptop

#1 Post by dbyun » Tue Oct 24, 2006 12:35 pm

the website is shieldzone.com, my friend just got her new nano covered in the material they sell and i was very impressed. it was thin, clear, and fit perfectly around her ipod and lifetime warranty. It felt like it was very high quality.

so, I went on their website and while they do Apple notebooks, no IBM so I asked a few questions.

im sure the shipping must be less than that...it only took buy.com 10 bucks to ship it to me. i mean com'on our laptops are just under 3 lbs.

anyone ever do/know someone that has this? or is interested?
In regards to your question, we offer an automatic discount of 15% on
orders that are $200 or more. Listed below is an approximate cost that
is usually very close to the final payment. Usually the cost varies
because the return shipping is changed from the original estimate or
the device is more heavy and expensive than anticipated.

Price Listed for One Laptop

Custom Service Fee $ 9.95
Cost of the Shield $54.95....this is for a full body design*
Installation $10.00
Shipping/Insurance $30.00....this will vary due to the weight of the laptop
and the value as the insurance is 1/2 cent cost
per dollar of value.

* The full body design for any laptop does not include a screen shield
as that is in the research and development stage at this time and not
available for purchase.

As previously noted, this is an approximate cost, but the total price
does not vary too much from this. The shipping is based on UPS Ground
prices. If you selected UPS Next Day Air, for example, you could
expect to add at least $40 more on top of the above price listed.

If you have more than one device sent in, the $9.95 custom fee is per
design and device. More than one laptop of same model would have the
fee applied only once. The installation cost goes down per extra
device. It is $10 for the first installation, and $5 there
after...regardless of the design.

They sell precisely precut pieces of 3M scotchcard paint protection film, along with a special spray (water & rubbing alcohol mixture should work fine) and a squeegee (a credit card should work) and a lifetime warranty. If you don't need those things, then just buy the film in bulk for a lot cheaper....

I imagine that the shield would give it a reflexive appearance, which (unless you have an S30) doesnt fit a thinkpad too well. Really, thinkpads are durable enough on their own. I really beat mine up, and I've only got a few light scratches on the back of my screen. They'll replace the keyboard at any time under warranty (just say your spacebar is broken or something), so thats very easy to take car of when it comes down with shiney keys syndrome. Once the plastic parts get damaged or worn badly, just replace them. A screen backing is $30-40, palmrest is $20-30, probably cheaper (and would look better) to just replace the parts when you need to.

You can buy the film in bulk here:
http://www.invisiblemask.com/bulkfilm.html

The price starts at $5.83 per square foot, for single sheets.
If you buy enough of it, the price from them is $4.13/sq-ft
I reckon that shieldzone.com are making a tidy profit, reselling it at about $275/sq-ft for ipods.
