[X30 Broken Screen] What can i do with it ?

#1 Post by dominion » Wed Oct 25, 2006 12:40 am

Hello,

I have a Thinkpad X30 with a broken screen but is still working ;)
What can i do with it ?
For the moment, i have disassemble it in order keeping only the keyboard.
Any cool idea ? Perhaps, I can transform it in a sort of thin client ...

Thanks

Repair cost may be rather high, but you could look for replacement parts (or an X2/X3 series for parts) on eBay if you are handy enough to replace the screen yourself.

Is it the actual LCD that has failed, the hinges or something else?

I have a machine like that - an X30 that had a cup of coffee dumped into it with the only ill effect being that the bottom half of the screen is now grayed out. I may buy an X30 on eBay to cannabalize (seem to still be going for at least $200) or a screen itself (LCDs seem to be at $90 or more) but I'm worried that it might not be just the LCD that went bad.

Near term use planned for it is to use it as a livingroom thin client of sorts - hook it to a HDTV LCD with a VGA input to use for couch browsing (with a wireless keyboard/mouse) during commercials or instead of watching TV (which gets worse and worse). With 1GB of RAM in it the PIII performs well enough for that and to run iTunes for access to a music library on the LAN and Internet radio.

The screen on my X30 just died. Sudden. When I hit the fn F4 key to switch internal/external monitor, it gets a brief pink glow. It appears totally dead otherwise. Works fine with external monitor. Any educated guesses as to what may be wrong?
