Hitachi travelstar 40gb not even detected in T41

#1 Post by Am » Wed Oct 25, 2006 3:06 pm

Hi there. I've just bought Hitachi Travelstar 40gb (HTS541040G9AT00) since Toshiba disk on my T41 that I've bought few days ago (used) just died.

Unfortunately T41 just can't see the drive. I've got something like:

intel boot agent: media failure
system not found

I've downloaded HD firmware upgrade iso and burnt it, but it detects only CD, desn't even see this HDD.

Also I cannot find ANY hdd diag in the BIOS - even any info about HDD detecion, parameters etc, which is available in every bios I've seen to date.

What can I do? The other disk (Toshiba), though damaged, is detected and starts booting XP.

Thanks for any help

AC

ps. would upgarding HDD firmware on other notebook help? or it doesn't matter if even BIOS doesn't detect the drive?

Is this a new drive? did you move the mounting hardware from your old drive to the Hitachi before you installed it into the T41? If the drive is good (functional) then the T41 should see it. It is possible that the drive is not fully inserted or may have a bent pin that is shorting some of the signals.

Do you think that the mounting hardware might cause the problem? Actually I've just checked the old (damaged drive) and the message is the same:

PXE-E61 Media test failure, check cable.

Do you think that without proper mounting (even if pins are connected) it won't start because of some security checks?

Is there ANY way to check in BIOS whether it sees the drive?

Are there any things I should know about this mounting stuff? I didn't examined it while replacing old drive, so I might be doing something wrong.

Thank you for help.

cheers

PS. Yes, this is a brand new drive. At first it hadn't any partitions, but after initial problems I've formatted it on T600 (without any change).

Yep, I guess it was the mounting - I've installed it tightly, and the drive has been detected (I guess the Thnikpad does saome additional checks and doesn't connect the drive if the mounting is invalid). I've already found that the way to find whether BIOS detects the drive is to go to Startup section in BIOS and check whether there's HDD model number next to "HDD".

Thanks a lot.
