ThinkPad 600E Video Driver Issue
Hello all,
Here is the situation:
1. Reloaded windows 98 SE fine.
2. Video screen will not enlarge past 640 x 480 ish. Ok driver time.
3. Installed drivers from IBM.com. Windows says they are not the right ones, installed anyway, of course now video is all wacky.
4. removed those drivers and installed the default windows drivers and still can't enlarge past 640 x 480 ish.
Now, are there other drivers for the 600E that i am overlooking? or is there something else i need to install? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you didn't load up the LCD display monitor when you installed Win98SE? This file is available here:
Windows 98 installation supplement files - ThinkPad 770, 600E/X
Technically, you are supposed to copy the "monitor.inf" file over to the Windows 98 installation directory before you install, but you can do so afterwards, and then correct your display when you follow the instructions to "C. Apply IBM LCD Color Profile".
Which drivers did you try to load? Did you follow the instructions exactly?:
Video driver (NM2200) for Windows 95/98/Me - ThinkPad 380Z, 570/E, 600E

Now, I did get the recovery disk for the laptop after i installed windows 98 SE, Now, would it be better to use this? and if so, what is the process to load the recovery disk?
So basically now I have
one windows 98 se disk
and a Thinkpad 600e Version 1.6 recovery cd
I recon there is a boot floppy or something that will get the recovery disk going? since it doesnt seem to be bootable or have a defininte exe to run to start the process that i know of.
and installing XP would be nice, but the programs that are run on the laptop run under 98 and not XP. unfortunatly.

The recovery disk will not be of help. You haven't got 98SE installed correctly yet, so you won't be able to "recover" to an earlier, correct installation.
I don't think you are experiencing a major problem. This is a typical issue that arises during the installation of Win98SE for some people, and we should be able to fix it by applying the correct drivers in the correct order.
Did you try the monitor.inf file I pointed to above? Did you try the video driver I pointed to above? What monitor is listed and what display adapter is listed currently in Device Manager?
Phil.

Thanks alot guys, got it working just great.
It was a driver issue. But, it wasnt the driver we all
thought. Every time i went to the IBM website for video
drivers on my specific model, it gave me the drivers for
the NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV. Which in fact, my 600E
did not have. So even when i forced it to install, still had
issues.
I managed to get it online and have the
IBM website Autodetect my system, and it was in fact a
600E but it had some other video. Can't remember the
name offhand, but it was something 128. But got those
drivers and the did the trick. As well as finally getting the
correct BIOS update.
Again, thanks everyone for the help, i learned about
Thinkpads over the last few days.

That's great news.
I think that you actually have a plain vanilla ThinkPad 600 and not a ThinkPad 600E. I should have double-checked when you gave us your model number. The drivers I linked to were for a ThinkPad 600E and that is why they didn't work on your machine.
You have a ThinkPad 600 2645-51U.
Your video adapter is therefore a "NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD". And you can find almost all other drivers for you machine in the Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad 600, 600E, 600X (aka the ThinkPad 600 driver matrix), but just be sure to get drivers for the 600 and not the 600E.
