My laptop is backordered.. wtf?!

#1 Post by Vasant56 » Fri Aug 27, 2004 4:19 pm

I ordered my laptop from ibm canada epp.. it said immediate/next day shipment, and I expidited the order... I called IBM today just to ensure everything was going ok, and the lady was like "Well, your laptop is backordered. There is a list of 25 laptops on this backorder list". I'm like "WTF, I need this soon, the website said tommorow", and she was like "well, the website is wrong". WTF is the point in my expiditing the order? I needed the laptop by next friday, and she says I'm looking at about 3 weeks until it's shipped.

What do I do? Can I yell at them? The only other laptop I wanted was on the website as 4-6 weeks, although I didn't look at the other ones..

This is really disappointing.. I may have to cancel my order if it means it won't come for a while..

It'd be cool if they'd upgrade my model for free, but I don't see that happening..

Why not just order the 2378-DXU from www.mwave.com it is the basically the same notebook except it has bluetooth and a 60GB 7200 drive. The warranty is only 1 year instead of the 3year on the 2373-JXU, but it is very cheap/easy to add 2 years on to the warranty and you can do it anytime up until your 1st year is up. The price is $2198USD and it is in stock. Here is the link.

Did you order it from the general laptop section or the back to school sales? I got mine from the latter section (every laptops there are pre-stocked), and got it on the third day. I actualy picked it up from the Markham warehouse, so that saved me another halfday :D . May be this is the "back to school" season, but when did IBM started targeting the home/student market?

Anyway, don't worry too much about the backlog time, it's usually never that late, (I know because I work in the Canada Distbution Centre).

I don't know what mwave's return policy is, but I would not suggest buying from a 3d party unless you can get a 30-day no hassle return or a dead pixel check.

Buying here from Bill or going IBM direct is the prudent thing to do.

Buying in canada was a must, because I would have to be 15% customs and stuff when it came.

I ordered it from the laptop section in the Employee Purchase Plan Friend & Neighbour website.

I think my order is backlogged too. When did you eventually get it?

My T42p (HVU) is also backordered. Initially, it was 01/07/2005 and now it is 01/12/2005.

My rep said that it should be shipped much sooner, but when I called, it did say 25 in stock and 90 in order, so that would mean that they had to build 65 additional units and burn them in...

Getting my docking station on Monday, however.

This sale they are doing now has made all of the sale laptops backordered I think.

I have a question tho. if they don't charge us until Q1 2005. Why still have sales?

Odd. I just purchased a 2373-HVU ... I believe it ordered it on the 15th or 16th of December and it shipped Monday from Hong Kong. It arrived on Wed.

I was very surprised about this very quick turnaround as I was told it might be 2-3 weeks for delivery.

I just notice that it was shipped today (12/26), instead of 01/17/05.

So I should have it by Wednesday.

I've gathered the following to do once I get it:

1) Generate Recovery CDs
2) Update Windows OS, IBM Software, BIOS, etc. (Is there an easy way to do this?)
3) Check keyboard; monitor for problems

Anything else?
