New hard drive louder inside T42 than outside of it

#1 Post by etherealtml » Fri Oct 27, 2006 2:33 am

I just bought a new 80GB 5400rpm hitachi hard drive to replace the one that came with my T42. However, I have this problem that the drive runs very loud when inside my system, and it is constantly fluctuating in sound pitch even when there is no reading/writing activity. However, when I take the drive out and use it inside of a small usb enclosure, the drive runs quiet as a mouse even while reading/writing.

Is there any way to get the drive to run as quietly in my system? Im hoping maybe there is some kind of bios setting I can tweak or if anyone knows a 3rd party app that can control the speed of the hdd please let me know.

I know hitachi Feature tool is suppose to let you adjust the accoustics level of the drive, however I've not been able to make my stock 5400rpm hitachi 40gb silent

You can get the feature tool from www.hgst.com, but your harddrive has to support acoustic management. Try using this tool to set acoustic level to lowest.

I have tried to put drives in some laptops where I've had the same experience as you, because the drive simply didn't fit into the harddrive enclosure. I ended up getting another drive...
