Cannot insall Windows XP on Thinkpad T20 - Help!

#1 Post by SwordPlay » Fri Aug 27, 2004 8:34 pm

I am new to IBM an just purchased a T20 to see if I like it before investing in somthing newer.

I formatted the hard drive and am trying to install Windows XP Pro. The problem is that every time it about half way through the installation, it freezes up. After several attempts to start over, I noticed that it freezes in the exact same spot.

I have tried everything I know including different CD's and swapping out some of the components on the computer, but the problem persists.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to do something special to the hard drive before installing XP? I am fairly knowledgeable about computers, but this has me stomped. Please help.

sounds like this might be driver related. but first. as strange as this might sound, can you try the install with the battery pack removed. does that work?

this might be of some interest too, but does the system stall when installing devices?

Do have an extra memory module installed? Have you updated the BIOS? Early versions didn't support XP (shouldn't freeze though)?

I have tried different memory module configurations as follows:

(1) 128mb dim
(1) 256mb dim
(2) 256mb dims
(1) 128mb + (1) 256mb dims

It does freeze up when installing devices. The computer came without any IBM software, so I don't have any additional drivers to install. The link above suggest that XP is already installed on the computer. However, I can't even get that far yet.

I will try removing the battery and see if that works. Heck, I'll even do a hand stand at this point if it works :)

Where can I get a copy of whatever software was suppose to come with the computer for a restore? Any other suggestions? Please......

Reseat or remove the Mini-PCI card.

I have a T20 with XP Pro and it works fine - had no installation issues. But every few months I need to reseat my Mini-PCI card to fix a lockup during boot.
