Surge protector for broadband connection

#1 Post by leoblob » Fri Oct 27, 2006 11:30 am

Just got high-speed access via cable modem. I asked the cable guy about surge protection and he said it was in the cable box on the outside of the house (but he was fuzzy on the details). I feel like I need to do something else (additional) but I'm not sure what.

A few articles I read stated that the surge protection built into a standard home-type coax surge protector can actually interfere with the incoming signal... ???

Any thoughts/ideas appreciated, since a surge coming into my house would take out all my computers in a single blow.

Thanks!

On my cable feed there's a ground wire affixed to a ground stake. Looks like what Hams refer to as a "Blitz Plug".

The ground stake is also shared by my FIOS connection which has two ground wires, one from the NID on the outside of the house and one from the modem inside the house.

Can you explain this a bit more? I'm not familiar with any of those terms.

Thanks.

Blitz Plug -A can type lightning arrestor mounted inline with your RG58 feed.

Ground Stake - A copper rod driven into the soil to serve as a grounding point for electrical systems.

FIOS - Fiber Optic System.

NID - Network Interface Device.
