Hair in LCD or damage?

#1 Post by underclocker » Fri Oct 27, 2006 3:02 pm

I recently picked up a T23. Only issue is a thin line on LCD.

It looks like a black hair. From a side angle, all the pixels seem to glow bright, and the line isn't apparent.

What's going on?

There is no obvious damage to the LCD, front or back.

Just my opinion...

Since the last picture shows the "hair" as white, while all other pictures are black, I would say what you are looking at is a "hairline" fracture of the LCD's glass face.

It can't be to deep a scratch if the LCDs aren't spewing out of it, must only be on the polarising layer...

A crack in the glass is an interesting possibility. There is absolutely no damage to the screen, not even a faint scratch.

Have others seen small cracks in the LCD glass (is there actually glass somewhere in there?)

An LCD panel consists of two thin sheets of glass where the fluid is between these sheets. on the back side, there are 4 to 5 sheets of plastic that acts as light guides to evenly spread the light from the bottom light source. I would have to agree that this looks like a small crack, although the crack has not broken any of the transparent conductors, if it did, the space below and to one side would be black. If the damage is not on the outer surface, there is no way that it could have gotten to the back side unless the panel was disassembled and a hair got between the glass and the plastic sheets.

In any case, do not press on that spot, it might grow...

That is very interesting. I'll be sure not to press there. I guess I'm lucky that it's on the bottom to the side. It's not really an issue while using the machine.

Thanks for all the good explanations.

Were you aware of that defect when you bought it?

Actually, no. I bought a very poorly described ThinkPad for a very good price on eBay. I was hoping for the best, and did O.K.

Other than that one issue, the machine is in great shape, including the battery.

I personally reccomend that you hit the cracked spot really hard just to see if it smashes, if it smashes then it deffinatly was a crack, if not, then it was a hair.

j/k

haha, Although it would be a pretty good excuse for a new lcd ;D

I just purchased this T23 from underclocker, and I have a shocking relvelation about the LCD...

The "crack" has moved from its previous position (seen in pictures), and now sits horizontally. So much for that hairline crack idea! It really must be a hair.

Wow! It sure looked like a crack to me  . If it's just really a hair maybe you can carefully extract it and send it to CSI to see if they can identify the worker in the Samsung/Hitachi/LG factory that lost it?

P.S. This one goes into the TPFD diagnostic section.

The CSI Lab would have cracked this case wide open by now  (you missed a good one Ray!)

Is it a hair or is it a crack? Well, if it's somekind of optic fibre or a bit of plastic strand then it may have both properties. Besides, it ain't curly but it could be from a pig or a brush. So, I'm guessing somekind of plastic or optic fibre.

dsigma6, WOW! I am glad to hear it's not cracked!

How did you get it so fast, I just sent it on Friday (today is Monday)?

Maybe the shipping moved the hair - I'm sure USPS is gentle with their stuff!!!

Maybe you can tap it down to the bottom, where it might have come from!

Post an evidence picture if you can, I'd love to see it!

Good luck with it.

Y'know, if 'tis a hair then you could always just try tapping the display gently untill the hair goes all the way down to the bottom

Don't ya think that's been attempted!!??

I'll be patient with it, but I think it may eventually move...thing is, I believe it has moved up from its previous position.

Quite impressive, that guy moved an inch or two to the left and now is lying down. Maybe it's some debris floating in one of the liquid LCD layers?

There has to be a way to get it to drift to the bottom.

Centrifugal force perhaps? Take the LCD panel out of the lid, hold it high above your head (hair at the highest point), then quickly swing your arm down towards the ground. Be sure to keep a tight grasp on the LCD :) .

For those who don't get my humo(u)r... That's a JOKE, son!

Hey, that's an even better idea! Dan! Do you iceskate? A couple of spins with your arm holding the panel out ought to take care of that pesky hair!

Maybe I'll head out to the rink this weekend. I've been itchin' to do a triple axle like nobody's business!

If I could only think of the move where they start out spinning in circles, slowly lowering into the insanity driven spin...But yea, that would surely toss the LCD a hundred feet.

I was all ready to follow through on your original recommendation, until I saw that I had to hold it at the "highest point."

You mean the hammer throw? Yes, you could put the laptop in a mesh bag, attach as long a rope as you could twirl and go for it!

Or you could bump off one of the kiddies from the merry go round and get someone to accelerate it to its maximum rotational speed. Actually I think if you fully load the merry go round with kids, spin it to its maximum, and bump off the kiddies one at a time you might be spinning like crazy :D If that fails put the laptop in a backpack and leap off a tall building - just be sure that the laptop is well cushioned by your body when you hit the ground - and of course, the LCD has to be held vertically otherwise you'll have to try again. :)

On a more serious note, what about charging up a bit of plastic with static electricity and seeing if the hair will be repelled by the charge. Of course you don't need such a large charge as to cause a discharge. You could start a whole new "video" game.

Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain.
