HD problem?...any thoughts?

I just got my laptop, and i think i may have a bad harddrive. The reason i say this is because i'm having difficulties installing files to my system...everything from ad-ware, winamp, winzip (to name a few) are all giving me errors. The O/S works great as is, except when it comes to installing files "downloaded" off the internet. Could be the H.D or Windows Installer, any ideas.
