Has anyone come up with a simple solution for the 2010 error

#1 Post by douggg » Sat Oct 28, 2006 12:04 pm

I've owned serveral IBM T Series computers (T20s, T23s) I 've installed Hitachi 60 gig 7200 RPM drives to improve performance and have been pleased with the results.

I just purchased 2 T43s and 2 Hatachi 60 gig hard drives, HTS726060M9At00 bare drives from Fry's. What should have been a no brainier has turned into a nightmare; I’m getting the 2010 error message.

I’ve been reading the posts, and followed the directions on IBM/Lenovo’s web site to:
Upgrade the BIOS – Would not upgrade, I have 1.29 2006-8-21
Upgraded the Embedded controller – Would not upgrade, I have 1.06
Tried the ISO (FWD44.ISO) wouldn’t upgrade either.

(I have NOT tried any of the file mods or bit flipping.)

In reading the posts I can’t figure out if a non-IBM drive can be used or not. If you read the posts they are quite confusing. It appears some people have done things that get a non-IBM drive to work, yet the same instructions for others result in failure.

After spending several hours reading posts and struggling with this, I’m pleading for your assistance.

Can someone tell me can I get a non-IBM drive to work in a T43 without having the 2010 error message?

If so, can you post the instructions I need to follow?

Thanks

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

For "simple" solution, you can always try the firmware flash for Hitachi drives here. Unfortuanately, for other drives, there is really no such firmware flash to get them to pass off the 2010 firmware check.

One of the stranger things is that there are actually non-IBM HDDs that work, i.e. they don't throw 2010, out of the box as is. The problem with buying drives like that is not even the same model line of drives from somebody, say Hitachi or Seagate, is guaranteed to work since each batch might have received a slightly different revision of special firmware. There really is little rhyme or reason to it.

Thanks for your answer - But No sucess

#3 Post by douggg » Sun Oct 29, 2006 11:49 am

I looked at IBM/Lenovo's web site.
The drive I have is listed - exactly.
I downloaded fwhd3413.exe and extracted to a FDD.
Installed the Hatachi HD.
Powered on got the 2010 erroe
Hit <ESC> to boot
Sucessfullt botted from an IBM USB FDD
Found the drive stated" New new firmware found".
The firmware I have is MH40AG8A
I selected 2 to upgrade eventhoug an upgrade is not needed.
Comes back saying, "No update needed"

OK, I don't get it. What am I doning wrong?

Is there anyway I can get this to work?

Thanks

I've been told we are screwed by IBM/Leveno.

Eventough the drive I have is on the list of supported drives it still doesn't work. You have to use an IBM drive.

Just flashed my HTS721010G9AT00 to MPCA51AB.

Had some problem as well but managed to find somewhere in the postings here that you need to exit the "wrapper" of FWHD44.

Here's how I did it.

1. Download the FWHD44 iso from IBM site and burnt it to a Cd using Alcohol 120%.
2. Boot up using the CD.
3. Select 2 to update, but no update required.
4. Pressed Esc.
5. Pressed any key to exit to the screen that says power off.
6. Pressed CRTL+C.
7. Input in the following"copy MCZIA51A.BDF MC4OA51A.BDF"
8. Input in "HFUI15 OA51A MCZIA51A.BDR/ F MPCA51AB.TBL"
9. Pressed "U"
10.Will show update failed, key in"HFUI15 IA51A MCZIA51A.BDR/ F MPCA51AB.TBL"
11. Pressed "U"
12. Showed update success, and booted up with the 2010 error gone.

For your case, try this at your own risk:

Repeat step 1 to 6 then~

7. Input in the following "copy MH4IA6GA.bin MH4OA6GA.bin"
8. Input in "HFUI15 OA6GA MH4IA6GA.bin/ F MRHA6GA.tbl"
9. Pressed "U"
10.Will show update failed, key in"HFUI15 IA6GA MH4IA6GA.bin/ F MRHA6GA.tbl"
11. Pressed "U"

I repeat again, try this at your own risk if you want to.

Not working yet

#6 Post by douggg » Sat Nov 04, 2006 11:31 am

Your directions are beautiful, could not be any more clear. – Thank you!

But step 8 didn’t work for me.

The copy, Line 7 worked perfectly
On Line 8 I received Invalid *.BIN Parameter name!!MH4IA6GA.bin/F
And I was brought back to a C:/> prompt
After trying this 4 times, checking for spelling/spacing mistakes

I tried changing the spacing with the /F parameter
HFUI15 OA6GA MH4IA6GA.bin/F MRHA6GA.tbl
HFUI15 OA6GA MH4IA6GA.bin /F MRHA6GA.tbl
HFUI15 OA6GA MH4IA6GA.bin / F MRHA6GA.tbl

No success.

I really appreciate your assistance, but what am I doing wrong?

Thanks

In looking at other posts, do I need a -pm parameter?

Making it
HFUI15 OA51A -pm MCZIA51A.BDR/ F MPCA51AB.TBL

Just a thought

Sorry, didn't check the update line...perhaps you can try using

"HFUI12H OA6GA MH4IA6GA.bin/ F MRHA6GA.tbl "

Think this should work.....

I'm looking to purchase a 7200 RPM 100 gig Hitachi drive, but am now skeptical after seeing all these '2010' errors. Can anyone recommend a specific model number for the hitachis that will skirt this problem somehow? and provide the best performance? Thanks guys.

Like the OP said, the posts on this topic have been difficult to navigate through.

I have probably spent 8-10 hours on this, and it's still not working.

I really want to thank the person for giving my fantastic instructions. But I just blew another hour or two and it's still not working. I will give this a try and let everyone know.

The 7200RPM drives give machines an incredible performance boost.

I just tried something new. I purchased an eSATA PCMCIA/Card adaptor. I’ve attached an external eSATA 7200RPM dive. I’ve also have external 7200 RPM USB 2 drives that work great. (I work with lots of very large files, and the speed of the drive makes an enormous difference.

I’m wondering if anyone has any disk drive performance testing software. I’d like to test what the actual performance differnece if, (if there is any) between eSATA, USB 2.0 and 1394. Know of any software for testing?

Thanks

Get HDTune and perform some benchmarking with it, you should be able to see the difference once it completes. As far as I have tried, it works with any mass storage device registered as an HDD by the OS. :)

I still get an error
Invalid *.BIN parameter Name!!MH4IA6GA.bin/F
Can press U because I am at the command prompt.

douggg,

Why don't you try djpharoah method? His post can be found in http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20858. Seems like he has the same drive as you have, better still PM him for his advice.

HD Tune looks great. I have a quick question. With "Test Speed/Accuracy" set to Accurate - Why is it, if I run the test 2, 3, or 10 times in a row, (only application running on the machine), do I get different results?

Shouldn't the results be consistent?

Thanks,
Douggg

Well, the results change and HD Tune does its best to average them so as to give a more accurate answer. Although, even with no other applications running, you can still have other things utilize the HDD which takes up bandwidth and, each time, causes the results by HD Tune to be a little off. To really get a good idea, you have to minimize all the processes that are writing to the HDD and only leave those that are essential for the operation of Windows running, this includes explorer.

You can't get rid of all of them, but a good deal of them. :)

Just spoke to IBM Tech Support and Hitachi Tech Support.

Hitachi is telling me don't do the upgrade, it may not work. IBM at first told me to contact Hitachi, but when I got to level 2 I was told it should work and there is a problem with IBM BIOS update utility and my call would be escalated to Level 3 who would not be able to fix the problem and then to a Support Engineer. (The person who can fix the problem.)

I’ll let you know what they tell me.

I spoke with Hitachi and IBM.

Hitachi told me the IBM flash does not flash ALL the memory in the drive, only part of it. You'll wind up with some Hitachi code and some IBM code which will probably lead to problems.

Hitachi told me I could use the drive and just to change the BIOS to ignore the 2010 error on boot-up. <F1 during boot, Start-up>

IBM tech support was very nice and told me to use an IBM drive. I was told I could get a 100 gig/7200 RPM drive for $180 dollars. (A little on the expensive, but I'll pay the extra $$ so I don't have to hassle with this any more. I called the IBM order line, only to find the drive on back-order and the price to be $279 with a 30 day warranty. WOW!

This sucks!

Can you give me the instructions you used?

I was provided the instructions for the 60gig/7200RPM drive that didn't work. (See previous posts.)

Thanks

I have just installed 100G 7200rpm Hitachi in my T43, so far I get 2010 error on boot and has to hit Esc key, but my BIOS is 1.23. As far as IBM/Lenovo posts starting with BIOS 1.24 you can set in BIOS to bypaas need to hit Esc key. I take it, the message wil still appear during boot. Or am I missing something?.

As I understand it, you see the message for a moment and the machine boots.
