Machine wont hibernate if online

#1 Post by PetraM » Sun Oct 29, 2006 6:58 am

Hello!

I haven't been following the forum for a while now. I've searched through old post regarding same issues but I couldn't find a problem similar to mine. I apologize if I have overlooked it.

I own a T42p with 1 giga RAM that won't hibernate when the power scheme is telling it to do so, if connected through wired or wireless network. If the computer is offline, it hibernates normally, after 2 hours.

Recently also, along with not hibernating, the screen won't turn off like it is supposed to, after 15 minutes. Again, this is only happening if the machine is connected to a network. Sometimes I leave it on at night and it's quite annoying that it won't go to sleep.

I thought the problem might be some programs that are stoping the machine from hibernating or turning the screen off but I left the computer on running nothing, just connected to wireless, and it didn't turn off.

Any suggestions appreciated.

The first problem, I don't know. I am not surprised that the machine won't hibernate if online. You should disconnect from the active connection and close things like Outlook before hibernating or standing by.

The second problem is strange. Check your BIOS for the power settings in there, and then check your power properties to make sure the profile you are using is properly set.

I have no screen saver (Windows Display Settings) and my Power Properties set to turn off my screen after 25 minutes while on AC (much shorter on battery). The screen turns off just fine no matter what happens to be going on in the computer.

Thank you for your quick reply. I might have accused my computer a bit too quickly - just now the screen was turned off. I have no clue what's stopping it to turn it off on other times. I'll check my bios and settings.

Regarding the hibernation issues: if it's normal that the machine doensn't hibernate if online - is there another way to make it hibernate after a period of time? Like with some settings Access Connections? (Sorry if I'm being silly now :) )

Hibernation is an action really designed to move the computer. So manually disconnecting and quitting live applications is the only way I know (because only I know what is running).

Standby will actually work no matter what is running (most of the time, anyway), but I still disconnect my connection before standing by. In my case, I standby (and make certain), then stuff the computer into my briefcase to take somewhere else.
