Blank screen on boot

#1 Post by lutami » Sun Oct 29, 2006 11:29 am

I have searched but nothing seems to relate.

On boot i get the one beep, sometimes the screen shows windows loading sometimes it doesn't, just stays blank, happens intermittantly, wireless card flickers and then stays constant green as it does when i'm connected but the screen stays blank.

Have run a system test, F1 on boot and all shows ok.

Somehow i managed to find a bootlog a couple of days ago, tried searching again and can't find a more recent one, can't remember how i found it in the first place, lucky i saved it.

Pasted below is what it shows, is it possible to find from this what may be wrong, some drivers aren't loading but it's double dutch to me.

Any thoughts on why this is happening please! logs a bit long but complete, am using the laptop now and it's working perfectly, til i have to reboot for anything :(

600E running XP.

I would say the first things to check is to see whether or not the video signal is being output at the VGA port on the back side of the laptop and if there is any pixel activity on the LCD (shine a bright flashlight, sorry, "torch", on it at an angle when powered up and you should be able to see a 'ghost' image of the display). The problem you describe could be caused by several things:

1) Bad inverter card
2) Sticky or dirty lid closure switch on the Sub Card
3) Bad connection of Sub Card and/or inverter
4) Bad CCFL (backlight) in the display
5) Motherboard problem with power/signals getting to inverter

My gut feeling is that there is nothing wrong with your Windows drivers, unless you are seeing a blinking cursor and not a totally blank (black) screen.

The 600E you see in my .sig has a problem in which the backlight does not turn on for a least 3-5 minutes after the system is powered up. It will eventually turn on (at least it has so far). It does not appear to be a thermal issue as even when it's been operating correctly, if I power off and then power back up, the light is dead for the same 3-5 minutes. Same thing happens if I switch from LCD to external video using the Fn+F7 key sequence. As soon as the LCD is switched off and then back on, it takes several minutes for the backlight to fire up. I have changed the inverter, LCD panel (and thus the backlight) several times, checked the connections of the Sub Card and lid switch, so my last guess is that it's a motherboard issue.

Thanks,

I can switch it on a dozen times and get the black screen, no cursor, seems it's booted as the wireless card flickers and then stays constant green.

Although the battery doesn't charge, if i turn it over, remove then replace battery and it boots first time, it will also boot without battery sometimes, no blank screen.

Turning it over doesn't always work but removing and replacing the battery does.

I'll find the online manual and attempt to check for anything loose but as i'm a bit nervous of doing this i may take it into the shop if nothing is obvious.

Can you check for any video coming out the VGA port using an external monitor? That will quickly tell you if there is a Windows booting problem. You may have to press the Fn+F7 key combination to activate the external video; I'm not sure at the moment if having the powered-on monitor connected to the laptop prior to booting will automatically enable the port or not.

My guess is the video card just went bad. From what you said, it has booted into XP and is at the login. The wireless card would connect to the network here. That what it does on mine. The video cards IBM put in these 600's are pieces of crap in my opinion. I do not know if the cards are part of the motherboard or if they plug into a socket. Hopefully someone else will know.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Check video with an external monitor. If you get consistant picture there, make sure the LCD cable is good and seatd firmly. Make sure the sub card is also seated firmly.

I have not had my 600E apart for quite awhile, but the 600X (and T2x) has the video chip firmly soldered onto the motherboard. I would assume that it's the same case with the 600E. Besides, there's no video card FRU in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

It's a chip soldiered to the motherboard.
