battery problem? random instant shutdown...

#1 Post by taz42zero » Sun Oct 29, 2006 10:59 pm

first, reason for my post in this forum instead of general is due to battery location being different on different models....

i just starting having random shutdowns while unplugged running off battery. it just shuts off completely, as if the battery were pulled out. then it won't turn back on until i pull the battery off and put it back in. this hasn't happened, yet at least, while on ac power.

what could be the cause to this? i was thinking maybe the battery just isn't getting a good connection, but this didn't happen with my prior motherboard. i just recently had my motherboard replaced under warranty when the usb 2.0 started functioning as a usb 1 only.

and now that i think about it, it might have happened under ac power once also. any ideas??

edit: what makes me think it isn't the battery is the fact that it has had no issues. its a 9 cell battery, and i can tell it isn't at its newest, but i still get decent life out of it....

Hmmm, if the battery checks out, I would be more suspicious of the planar instead. Neither is it likely a contact-quality issue with the battery. Does it happen when you move the Thinkpad? It could be that there is a bad overall connection on the mobo for the power supply to the various parts of the system. You might want to run a PC-Doctor test of the motherboard and see what that turns up. :)

ok, ran pc doctor tests, nothing bad... and the problem has happened when the laptop was on my lap, so maybe minor movement, but it hasn't happened with large movement, like when i am walking the laptop from one room to another.

so what next?

You could try checking the Event Viewer Logs, as well as the Windows DMP logs, but I don't think you will find anything of import relating to the sudden shut down. At this point, if the temps area well within range, as I assume they are since you said it happened one when you used it on your lap, then it is most likely a hardware problem with the planar.

yeah, temps are fine i'm sure, not sure what they are, but it rarely gets even warm to the touch. should i call and have them come put another motherboard in?

EDIT: well, it just happened again while plugged in when i lifted it up. i pulled the battery and put it back in (leaving the power cord connected) and nothing, so i pulled the power cord and the battery, put them both back, and it powered up again.

so what ever it is, when it happens, i need to disconnect all power to the motherboard (except the backup battery inside the case), then it will work again....

also, its not the connection of the battery cuz when i wiggle the battery, there are no ill effects.... what the hell?!?! this motherboard is less than one week old! is it really the problem?! :x

now the [censored] thing won't even start up at all, so i called ibm and i have a service guy coming out on wednesday to replace the motherboard for the 2nd time in 2 weeks for unrelated problems.

here's a question for those that have been ibm owners for a while.... i just bought this laptop about a month ago, and have owned nothing but dell for about 10 years, and have had nothing but great experiences. do ibm laptops typically have hardware issues like this? is this just a freak occurance that i've had to have the motherboard replaced twice now to fix 2 different problems? should i expect to see issues consistently arise?

Hi,

I experienced the same problem with my T40 on its first battery. It was for sure something with the battery, since after I chaged it the problem has not repeated again.... so you may very well be pointing at the right direction.
