R51 upgrade from Celeron to Dothan - no problem!

#1 Post by underclocker » Tue Oct 31, 2006 8:05 am

FYI, I upgraded my 2887 model R51 from a Celeron to a Banias and then a Dothan CPU. No problem at all. The BIOS and EC are very current for this model and I am using the most recent version of a Dothan CPU called 725A, 1.6GHz. This is a C stepping CPU.

R5x Series models 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895 shouldn't have any upgrade issues. The other models are like the T40, T41 & T42 models and can not be upgraded with 725A processors (or other C stepping CPU's) at this time. However, other Dothan (and all Banias) CPU's should work in all R5x's.

Performance bump is noticeable.

What is the FSB of the model you have? I tried upgrading an R51 2883-2ZU from a Celeron M 1.3 to a 1.6 and it wouldn't boot.

Ditto for my R50e. type 1834 from a M340 to Dothan 1.7

You should be looking for a 400FSB CPU..like SL7EG .

The main advantage I can see (at least for my useage) is
increased battery life, and the neat Centrino logo when I
log in.

well it was a no go on the celeron M or Pentium upgrades. If anyone can find me the processor that worked for them and post the link, I would certainly appreciate it.
