Yea, but the changes people are angered by aren't anything so severe. So the volume buttons are a contrasted color, and so they stopped painting the mouse buttons. I thought the point of Thinkpads is we don't care about cosmetics so long as it's not flashy.christopher_wolf wrote:That really so, eh?marlinspike wrote:You know, for Thinkpad users you guys sure care a lot about cosmetic nothings. My regular T60 came with symnatec client security rather than norton. It does it's job fine, however I'll be installing Nod32 instead anyway, that program has worked for me for years.
I am glad to hear that...and no one here disputed you, so I am hoping that is true about Symantec. My new T60 is due to arrive in the next few hours and I really need a security program for it, but many people HATE Symantec/Norton as a "resource hog". Gator says that it is not so and Perry_78 says it does a fine job, but he removed it anyway? I am so confused as to keep it or download another kind. I do want to use the fingerprint reader...is it tied into ThinkVantage or Symantec? Also, how much does the Symantec cost per year to subscribe? Thanks, Cory

I agree with the central idea of the previous posts, Thinkpad is so good that we must dig in the subjective and detailed lands of design and aestethics to find some cons.
I remember sometime when Lee Iacoca was the Chrysler's CEO, he said something like this: we must leave some minor faults on our cars so people talk about quality and defend it, because have discovered a little defect that can devaluate their priceless acquisition they need to talk more about the important issues present on their cars...
I think, that the design team at Lenovo is well oriented, they are talking again with Richard Sapper, and surely aren't going to screw the successful Thinkpad design principles and concepts like form (bento box) and color, black is black and I don't know if japanese use white bento boxes, ( just imagine burger's sauce spilled on them!). So don't worry, we will get receiving nicer machines in the future.
Other different thing is the Lenovo's brand, well I accept it as it is, ugly or not it is so , and they are the owners and producers of the machines, I don't dislike the Lenovo's brand beside the T60's mark in the bezel. Think for a moment that if it wheren't for the Lenovo's acquisition, probably the brand had dissapeared or be managed by Dell...

That was mainly a sticking point for certain users to whine about why they didn't have the highlights on the buttons anymore, why the volume buttons changed, and why such cosmetic changes spelled structual weakness, locust plagues, and problems with society in general. I even posted about why thinking that about the changes was ridiculous in the first place and Bill came up with the great recommendation of "If you want them back, do it yourself with teal and red fingernail polish!"marlinspike wrote:Yea, but the changes people are angered by aren't anything so severe. OK I went to the page and allowed it to scan my computer, it tells me I have a CPU ASM PENTIUM M X40(T1500) 2.0GHZ but I have a Duo (T2500) could this be a problem either now in downloading software or later if I need a repair?

Remember that LCDs don't JUST rely on the RGB values for colour balance.marlinspike wrote:I'd be interested to know how that works (not that I doubt it, I'm just interested). I figured that the calibrator could make up for that (by seeing that 0R 0G 0B was being displayed as XR 0G 0B and then creating a profile to artificially reduce R by X amount).perry_78 wrote:Actually no, the pinkish hue is a panel issue. The apple cinema displays had the same issues at one time, and those simply had an entire panel exchanged when a RMA was requested.
They rely on the 'White level' of the backlight, a slightly off-white backlight can create funny colours on an LCD, most LCD backlights often have a yellowish or blueish tinge to them, not often pink though... Although most of them go more pink as they start dying.

What about the 1337 gamer that sticks tons of sticker crap on their multi-colored, lap-crusher of a laptop?
Excuse me? I happen to have a failry powerful laptop that I use for gaming and I don't stick crap on it,
At least the 1337|<!dd!3H4xX0rZ don't suffer from emotional attatchment to IBM's logo.

Oh that's right, yes; by no means similar to extreme emotional attachments to the various </<*[ClAn]\'\|'|/'/{Tagz}*>/> at all....Now if one could include spinning skulls and little animated gifs of explosions in the text, that would teh 1337.gearguy wrote: At least the 1337|<!dd!3H4xX0rZ don't suffer from emotional attatchment to IBM's logo.

@ Cory:
1. Enter Lenovo's web page
2. Select Support/Downloads tab
3. Select autodetect this system
4. Under My system select: warranty status
5. In the new window select parts lookup or something like that
and voila! thats it!!!
Be warned: it is probably that all the parts installed in your machine don't appear in the listing... or as somebody told in this same topic they don't correspond to what it is suppossed to be inside... weird, but the web admin must be out of home... well everybody seems to be so nowadays... did you visited the Windows vista upgrade? First they announced November 6 to receive intstructions to the preceedings, yesterday they changed it to November 13!! (Not strange ... )

Thanks, Ramon, I was finally able to see the numbers, but it still didn't show me the manufacturers. I did a search on the forum and was able to determine I had the TMD screen and ALPS keypad. My battery wasn't listed. So far I am LOVING my T60, I posted some first impressions just now. Take care and keep enjoying your lappy!

Yes, I am sure that it will be fine. These parts, while manufactured by different companies, all have to be within Lenovo's specs. I know they may be slightly different in feel, but I don't think you could get a bad one! Can't wait to hear what you think of yours. I still don't know what type my keyboard is, how could you differenciate Chicony vs Alps is there any physical (not tactile feedback) which will serve to establish the manufacturer? ( well without dissassembling the unit...)
Somebody said the function keys in Alps are a little higher than the rest, even you could watch the support piece behind them is that true in yours Cory?

Once you get your Lenovo part number (FRU), not the manufacturers, do a search on that number in the forum. That's how I came up with my brands, ha! I will check my keys when I am back at the T60!rleo25 wrote:I still don't know what type my keyboard is, how could you differenciate Chicony vs Alps is there any physical (not tactile feedback) which will serve to establish the manufacturer? T60p LCD colors again...
Ok, I just got my T60p (2613HQU) and love it so far. (replacing a T41p).
Except my LCD color is off - I have a TMD display (13N7063) (see http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62784).
I've tried tweaking the colors in ATI Catalyst Control panel, but I can't seem to just get it right.
Anyone have some suggestions? Is it the backlight as some have said? Are all TMD's like this, or did I just get a bad one? Should I get it replaced and ask for a Samsung? I have 1-day on-site service, so it should be that hard...
Thanks for any help!

Yes, I've got Photoshop. Does that have some color calibration mode?marlinspike wrote:Do you have Adobe Photoshop? Or better yet some hardware calibrator like a Huey or an Eye-One or a Spyder?
So, here's a deeper question. Say I adjust the color controls in Catalyst Control. Where is the adjustment made? In the (8bpc) frame buffer (loosing quality)? In the RAMDAC (does the T60p have one, or is the LCD connection digital)? Ie, my real question is: if I fix this in software, am I going to be loosing some color precision?
Are the hardware calibrators good? What do you recommend?

If you have photoshop, go to start>control pane and switch to the classic view. You should see something called Adobe Gamma. That is a way to get kinda close to the proper color, but I find it's never dead on, plus for some reason it makes the color right but in my experience it makes the brightness too low (so what I end up doing is setting the color with it, then increasing each slider by the same amount (by using the arrow keys and counting how many times I press the arrow) until the brightness is done. Well, that's what I do until I can get to my calibrator (at home, I'm in college) anyways.
I use a Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Display 2. There are several options and they are all good. I've heard good things about the Huey, but it has to stay plugging into the computer so that can kinda be a PITA I would imagine (here's a review of the Huey btw http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1174347 not mine but I don't think Andy will mind).

Ooh, thanks!!! Doing it by eye with the Adobe Gamma control panel got me 90% happy.
And by looking at a non-dithered zoomed grey scale while adjusting, I've answered my own question - all this adjustment happens on the analog side, so you don't loose any color accuracy. whew.
But now that I'm looking at color calibration devices, I think I want one

Heh, yeah they're a must for anybody who does any real photography. One thing though, there are A LOT of scam photo websites out there, and since photo sites tend to sell calibration devices I figured I'd mention that.
