T-43p and 7200 rpm Hard Disk

#1 Post by hkelley » Wed Nov 01, 2006 10:45 pm

I am contemplating replacing my original T43p HD with a 7200 rpm version to improve overall performance. I would like to know any receommendations as well as experiences with such a conversion.

Will a 7200 rpm drive create a higher demand on the battery and thereby reduce battery life?

I am currently using the stock Fujitsu MHT2060 ATA 60 gb drive.

The differences in power consumption are on the order of a few hundred mW, not enough to have a noticeable impact on battery life. The performance impact can be startling, though! 8)

I maybe slow but I thought all T43P shipped with 7200RPM HDs for the P model are the top of line of the T series.
I think there is very little if any impact on battery life but performance wise there is an big difference.

You raise an important queston. I have always assumed I have a T43p. It is a 2686-DHU. I can't determine if this is 43 or 43p. Is there a way to determine differently. The Lenovo website is not very clear.

The HD is FUJITSU MHT2060AH which is a 60 gb drive spinning at 5400.

You can easily determine this. If the print on the Clearplate says T43p, then you have one, if it says T43, you don't.

Thanks...I suspected it was that simple. However, never seeing a T43 and T43p alongside each other I couldn't tell. Thus I have a T43.

I just made the jump from a 5k100 80GB 5400rpm Hitachi to a 7k100 100GB 7200rpm Hitachi and have been pleased so far.

It took a little while to figure out how to upload the IBM firmware to the OEM Hitachi drive, but it's pretty easy and now it works great!

So did it not work out of the box? I had no trouble slipping a 7K100 into my X31 without a firmware upgrade. :?

It's only the T43's that have HDD issues (due to the SATA->PATA bridge). Well known issue....see the sticky in the "Thinkpad T4x Series" thread index...
