z60m Memory Dilemma

#1 Post by morovan » Thu Nov 02, 2006 4:05 pm

Hi Everyone,
I purchased a 1gb stick of Mushkin DDR2 PC-4200 CL4 (991395) for my z60m (2531MJU), because it matched the stock memory. After installing, my machine ran fine for 14 hours - then I got a blue screen with an IRQL NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO error message. I rebooted and chose Do Not Restart Automatically, and I got a blue screen message PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGED AREA. I then installed the Mushkin all by itself, same error. I reinstalled the stock memory and now everything works fine again. I ran the MS memory test in DOS, and it didn't come back with any errors.

Do I need to get a different stick, or is there a dual channel issue? Anyone have any ideas?

TIA!

Did you compare the power requirements of the Mushkin vs. ibm spec?

If they do match, seems that you need to get a new stick! (or send back the Mushkin.) Strange that it would run for a period of time before failing, though..

No, I did not compare the power specifications. I think I will RMA this RAM and get another stick.

Can you recommend RAM for this machine? I originally got Mushkin becasue I thought it was the *best* . . .

This should work (I recently ordered a similar stick for my z61p)

This should as well, if you want to go for the gold:

I always get www.crucial.com - someone here recommended them to me a few years ago, and so that's what I use now. They're not the cheapest, but they're not priced too bad either (and sometimes I find them listed cheaper at amazon or buy.com or somesuch - especially when memory prices are fluctuating).
$145 at the moment:

EDIT: like now, newegg has them for $124 and then a $10 mail in rebate:

Micron is supposedly a top quality ram supplier, and they are US made (I think?) - they supply the ram for Crucial and Corsair (which many argue is the best). Mushkin is also supposed to be good, as is Kingston.
X21 (upgrade: 384MB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
T42 2378-DXU (upgrade: 1.5GB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
Z60m 2531-MTU (upgrade: 2GB ram)

The Crucial RAM you recommended from newegg.com works like a charm!
