IBM T4x CPU upgrade benchmarking scores

#1 Post by cs98sss4 » Thu Nov 02, 2006 4:40 pm

I have recently got a Dothan 2.10 chip to upgrade my ageing Banis 1.7.
Also have a Dothan 1.6 725 CPU as well.

I was thinking of running a few benchmarking tools and scores for the various CPUs.
I would like some input/suggestions that would help fellow thinkpad users.
Please note that I am only thinking about this from a performance view not how long power lasts unless someone supplies me with a decent battery.

I can predict that a lot more people will be considering upgrading due to Vista coming out too to get that bit more usage out of our T4x machines.
The test machine will be a T41p.

Thanks for feedback on what applications tools etc.

Great idea. This will be helpful and interesting.

You could start here for some benchmark info.

Hi

Maybe instead of using some benchmarks..would it better to use Super Pi?

What do you think about that idea ??

I personally would benchmark the systems with different applications. For example, fire up Photoshop, open a big file, and apply a filter, timing the time to completion. Of course, you can always try one of the synthetic benchmark suites out there. In that case, try something like Sisoft Sandra

I´ve a rather more interesting idea:
Do a 32M calculation of the PI number while forcing the GPU with ATiTool to
Current
T440p:
Core i7-4710MQ|8GB RAM|Intel SSD S3700 200GB | 14.1" IPS FHD | Windows 7 Pro, T450 Trackpad, Backlit keyboard, 2nd Caddy
Past: T420 HD+, X61s XGA, T61 14" SXGA+, T42p 14.1 SXGA+, T30, A22e

I really don't see the point of that test, since CPU and GPU should be pretty independent. That would be the best test for the cooling system though.

Cheers guys for all the suggestions.

I was thinking of a 3dmark for gaming. leaving ati clock to standard, but using DNA/Omega drivers.
1 for processing Prime, Super Pi or other.
Photoshop would be a good test but could someone tell me how to apply a filter to a picture?

Sis sandra would be the application benchmarking tool to test speed of CPU and various memory bandwidths.
As for cooling I will be applying arctic silver 5, unless theres something better.
I won't really be interested in the temperatures as the thermal paste won't have enough time for it to fully settle.
Thanks

Update:
Well my USB ports only functioning @ 1.1 seems like Motherboard has packed up, plus getting some random freezing and reboots.

Machine has been sent off for repair :( motherboard and lcd being replaced.
When it comes back, I'll get some testing done.

Was this before or after you updated the CPU?

This was happening way before upgrading the CPU.
I never got round to fixing it I thought it was a software problem until others on here had the same problem.
