I'm beginning to think that all extended warranties are very "gray". Even the Sony extended warranty, sold by sonystyle.com, with Sony trademarks all over the warranty documentation is not provided by Sony, but by a third party, who will always endeavor to find a loophole to allow them to decline cover for a repair.

LOL! So true...we (company I work for) purchased 300 extended warranty plans at a cost of $300 each...what a pain...they will deny 1 out of every three claims I make; sometimes higher and the warranty extension includes accidental damage protection!! Service is provided by servicenet, each claim takes at least 1 hour, with some going past 2.5 hrs....here is the process:
1- Call Sony get call number after explaining problem
2- Call service net, provide contract number (no contract number for the device...NO HELP!!...each device has its own contract number...they can not search by serial or customer name/ph #...after all information is provided, the information under the contract must match the information they have (s#, model, registered to) if any information is not correct they will not help you further...after all this, you provide detailed information of problem...if you make it this far, you get transfered to a "supervisor" who can approve the claim
3- The supervisor asks you the same friking questions as the person that took the call, if satisfied you get a "claim number" if not you get "I am sorry but your claim has been denied"
4- With the claim number, you must call Sony; provide the "call number and claim number" then they will issue the on-site service, laptop box to send in for repair or however your particular service contract is configured!! Then you wait 1 to 2 days for box, 7 to 14 days for repaired confirmation and an additional day to receive unit back!!
AND THIS IS PART OF THEIR B2B OFFERING...I can only imagine how it is on the consumer side!!
