Creating new hard drive for T43
Creating new hard drive for T43
I'm trying to create a new hard drive (120 Gig ST 912082) to replace the 60 Gig unit in my 2687-DUU. I'm trying to clone the original drive.
The original disk format is:
C:\, restore partition, D:\, E:\, F:\, G:\.
I partitioned the drive using Acronis Disk Director.
I've put the new drive in an external USB housing. Device manager recognizes the drive. I'm using Acronis True Image 9 for the disk cloning. I installed this on the existing D:\ drive.
I've tried three times to clone the drive. Twice I selected "automatic clone". The basic sequence:
- Reboot
- Analyzing Partition
- Locking Partition
- Checking Partition
- Analyzing Partion
- Error Partition Configuration has changed. Press any key.
After reading about the HPA, I did a manual clone. I left the new C:\ drive size (which would offset the start of the HPA), then set the size of the HPA to the original size, and adjusted the start of the (new) D:\ drive to compensate for the reduced HPA size.
This didn't play either. Same error sequence. So ... I'm assuming the HPA is my problem (it might not be).
1. What else could be creating the problem?
2. Suggestions or references on how to clone with the HPA?
3. Any major problems with using Disk Director to delete the HPA and then clone?
4. Pointers to what I might be doing incorrectly?

Yes I did. I believe I've done everything they recommend. The new hard drive shows up. I'm using Acronis True Image 9 (it's the SATA) deal.Kyocera wrote:Did you check out the HD Clone thread created by dsvochak and the mods?
I don't see a mention about a problem with this configuration

Original T43p hard drive is PATA! connection.
I did some further searching. After reading Category Talk:43 I pulled the original hard drive out of the laptop. I compared the edge connectors with the Seagate 120G SATA drive I purchased to put in the computer, and the edge connectors are different!
This makes me agree with the comment that even though the T43 chip set is SATA, it's working in PATA pass through mode. I now have a 120 G external SATA that I'll be able to use for backup when I get the new internal drive working.
That said, I'm back to the drawing board. I'll be ordering a new 120G ST9120821A (120GB 5400RPM) with PATA interface and using my ultra bay to do the cloning. I'll update this in about a week when I get back to the office and try the update.

So I got home and did the following:
1. Updated True Image to the latest available for version 9.
2. Installed the Seagate 120G in the ultra bay.
3. Did the clone.
4. Moved the new Seagate to the primary drive, and have made it to the 2010 error. This mainly annoys me, but I can live with it.
I'm off to learn about clearning the 2010 error.
