wobbly LCD panel

#1 Post by JonathanGennick » Sat Nov 04, 2006 7:57 am

I've a Thinkpad R42. A couple years ago, when it was still under warrenty, I sent the machine in for repair and it came back with a very wobbly LCD panel. I should have sent it back again, but never did. Now I'd like to tighten up that panel. Is that something reasonable to attempt at home?

The problem is the metal pieces to which the panel is attached. Wherever those are fastened internally, things need to be tightened down.

My mother has the same model. Hers does not have the same problem though. So it must be fixable.

if the thinkpad is out of warranty then there is nothing to be done..
you should bite the bullet and kick himself for not dealing with this issue at that time..

you should take it to a local service center and pay a few bucks to have someone who knows how to do it, do it..

either that or take your chances and get the HMM and HTEN do it yourself..

you can TRY getting lenovo to make a further repair, but speak softly if you do..

NS and SeanM: My bad with the model number. What I have is an R40.

Bill: I do kick myself. I can't change the past though.

FWIW, I kick myself for ever buying it in the first place. That R40 is the only Thinkpad I've ever bought that I've never liked. It's thick and clunky, and for some reason has just never set well with me.

I'm actually planning to give it away to a neighbor (I hate it that much <grin>. I just want to be done with it). I'd like to fix the wobble first though, and replace the battery that's gone dead, and put Windows back on (the kid doesn't want Linux).

I did download the hardware manual. I may take my chances and tear the laptop apart. It's such an old model that I don't really have much to lose. If I bust it, well, I never liked it to begin with.

p.s. I am not down on Thinkpads in general. It's just that one model that I never liked. The X30 that I just last week gave to my son has been a fantastic little machine. Ditto the old A-whatever that I used to use at work many years back. That A-series model is got me hooked into Thinkpads to begin with.

Not sure what I'm going to buy next. For now, I'm back to using a desktop.
