Are glossy screens less stable?

#1 Post by mogliii » Mon Nov 06, 2006 8:36 am

Hi,

I heard some rumors that glossy screens are easier to break than matte.

I have a T40, matte screen, carrying around every day in my backpack with books and stuff, no problem until now.

But a friend was recently looking around stores, and 3 different clerks in 3 different stores told her, that glossy screens can break easier and extra care should be taken when transporting.

can anyone deny/acknowledge this? I googled for one hour, but I only found two cases about glossy screens in Mac's that broke (when picking up the macbook at the screen frame)

Just interested.

I think that they are referring to the fact that the matte LCDs are gel-like and the glossy ones have a "glass" outer layer. (ie. glass is fragile)

Erm... my gloss LCD has a layer of transparent PVC as an outerskin I think, well, either that or a very similar material.

All LCDs have a glass substrate Steve.

The only physical difference between matte and glossy LCDs is in the plastic cover sheet over the display. The glossy ones have a polished topsheet, the matte ones have a "rough" topsheet.

I understand that.

I have no experience with the glossy Thinkpad LCDs, but the glossy LCDs that I have seen (ie. at WalMart, Office Max) are a hard glass covering on the LCD. More like a TV screen instead of an LCD. The LCDs that I have on my Thinkpads will show ripples if you press your finger on the front of the display. These other glossy LCDs that I have seen can be touched on the front without any ripples. Make sense?

Besides, I am only trying to guess where these opinions might have come from.

You tend not to find Glass overlays in notebook displays, simply because there's not enough room for them (yes they offer a protective layer for the screen but in order for that to work there has to be a sizable space between the two layers).
