program add/remove problem.. software restored ?

#1 Post by mirobe » Mon Nov 06, 2006 11:52 am

Hi,

Something strange happened to my T42 (win xp prof PL).

2 days ago, my firefox has been restored (I had to reconfigure
all my extensions etc).

Today I see that I am unable to uninstall most of my programs,
please take a look at:

http://rato.pl/t42.JPG

For example System restore icon is black (not red), no size is available,
and when clicked no "remove/change' button appears.

I've tried to run 'restore' and restore to the 2 days old checkpoint,
but I'm getting message "no changes were done, cannot restore ..."

Also, Software installer/System update wants to install 150MB
of software, and it tells that I do not have System security solution - though I have it installed?

Does it mean my registry is corrupted or I lost some files
on the disk/were damaged ?

Has anyone faced a similar problem ?
what should I do now ?

Thanks,

Robert

Run System Restore in Safe Mode to complete going back to the proper restore point.

'In any event, you can still uninstall programs; alot of utility software, such as CCLeaner, have Uninstaller lists that are usually made with redundant functionality akin to the ARP CPL. Should the Add/Remove Programs CPL stop functioning correctly, you can use CCleaner or the like to uninstall the software quickly and easily. :)

Thanks guys for all your replies above. I also read the mentioned thread. Unfortunately when running restore I can only restore
back to nov 3rd (when Pc-doctor was intalled) :-(

When clicking the calendar in restore I can't switch to october ?

Is there any chance I can get restore point from October ?

Thanks again,

Robert

You should be able to click and restore from any restore point, provided that the system was allowed to make a restore point at that time. Is this in Safe Mode?

Did you click on the little arrow on the top left corner of the calendar?

Yes, I did.

When I move the mouse over this arrow I get "Pokazuje poprzedni miesiąc" / displays the previous month. But when clicked nothing happens.

Is there any other way of managing the restore points ?

Are these some kind of files stored somewhere ?
Can I check if any checkpoints from october are available ? :-(

Robert
mirobe:

Any available Restore Points in October should appear within dates that show as bold type.

If, for some reason, you cannot access a known good Restore Point (that existed prior to running the PC Doctor 5 update), there is one other thing you can try, which might restore your last good backup of the Windows Registry and perhaps resolve your issues.

1. Boot into Safe Mode (press F8 during startup, before Windows loads).
2. Select "Last Known Good Configuration". Follow any prompts and reboot if/when instructed to do so.

Good luck! We feel your pain.
Regards,
Steve
