external numberic keypad

I purchased a external numeric keypad for my T42. The number keys on the numeric keypad only works when the numlock key is pressed on the laptop keyboard. But by pressing the numlock key, the letter keys on the laptop keyboard with numbers on them will only display numbers when pressed (eg. Pressing the J key will show 1, K will show 2…).

Is there a way to use the external numeric keypad and still be able to allow the letter keys on the laptop keyboard to display letters not numbers at the same time?

I Have tried but never suceded, that also that you can see when using external keyboard.
