Pink tinge on screen

#1 Post by lutami » Mon Nov 06, 2006 6:33 pm

Have a T20 that has a pink tinge left side of screen, started over start button around 2" wide, gradually went up the screen fadeing as it goes.

Just lately the whole screen when booted to desktop is tinged pink but clears after a while, getting worse each boot though.

By searching here i think it's either the inverter or the cable, going to try another inverter first.

Question... have seen advertised a 'refurbished' converter, is it worth buying, can they be refurbished? how easy/difficult are they to fit.

I would say save your money for a backlight and/or replacement LCD panel. I don't think that your inverter is going bad. A pinkish or reddish tint visible on power up and then slowly changing to white is an indication that the CCFL backlight in the LCD panel is past its prime. Just MHO.

If you are going to replace the inverter, be sure that you can get your money back if it turns out that it does not solve your pink problem. As far as the "converter", if you mean the inverter, then there's not much to that board but I suppose that somebody can replace components on the board. Mostly I just see units that have been "pulled" from operational systems.

I would agree with Ray. I had the same issue with my T22, and I have replaced backlight.

Yes, this is the backlight, not the inverter. Either the inverter works or it doesn't. Pink is the most obvious sign of a dying CCFL (backlight).

Good news and bad news:

Good news: Replacing the CCFL costs about $20.
Bad news: Replacing the CCFL is not for the faint of heart. These bulbs break VERY easily. I have attempted this process 3 times now and broke each bulb.

That is bad! Any hints on what to do (and not do  ) as I'll have to fix a dead backlight in the near future.
Cheers

Step One.

Read the Hardware Maintence Manual.

The Hardware Maintanence Manual does not have any procedure to replace the CCFL (backlight). The only thing it has is how to remove the entire LCD panel. The problem with trying to open up the panel to get at the CCFL is that it really was never designed that way. I don't believe that Samsung/Hitachi/LG ever intended the end-user to be able to R&R the tube. People have tried and some have been successful and others have not. It really depends on the type of panel being repaired, the person perfoming the replacement and luck (sorry Steve :) ). There's a sticky in the 600 forum which makes it seem easy to do. However, that's on a 13.3" panel and whatever was done on that screen may not apply to a 14.1" LCD from a T-series.

OK, got it! There is hope! Thanks for the reference. Looks like I'll have to practice some Tai Chi and calm myself down before the operation.
Cheers
