Old HDD Not Showing up in Windows XP

#1 Post by JHaislet » Wed Nov 08, 2006 1:38 pm

I recently upgraded to a 7200rpm HDD.
I put the original 80GB 5400rpm HDD in a 2.5" external USB drive enclosure. The enclosure shows up in windows, but the drive does not.
I've even opened Disk Management in the Administrative Tools folder and there's nothing there.
However, under "Disk Drives" in Device Manager, the enclosure shows up just fine "IOGEAR ION USB 2.0 DRIVE USB DEVICE"

Any ideas? I realize this might have something to do with Windows XP, since the disk I'm trying to open up previously was the main primary boot disk for my old install. Is there anyway to override XP "hiding" this disk?

I found out what the problem was...
It was the hard drive power-on password.
I had to re-install the drive as the primary in the T43, then go into the bios and disable all of the passwords (bios, hdd, ect).
Then the drive finally came to life.

I'm assuming IBM's Security Chip completely disables the hdd at the hardware level until the correct password is applied.

FYI to those replacing HDD's, remove the Power-on password first before removing the drive from your T4x.
