squeaking noise when scrolling windows
Ok, so my T60 came. One thing weird it does, but I'm sure this is just a settings thing. When I scroll on windows that scroll side to side I hear like a squeaky/whirring noise.

High pitched buzzing, eh? That has been present on most Thinkpads, and most laptops for that matter, with Intel chipsets for a long time now. It comes and goes and is usually rare, it is generally more likely to manifest when you run the Thinkpad on battery and you move the cursor to the top edge of the screen or scroll in Windows alot. It will either go away by itself or you can toggle the power schemes in the power manager and that usually makes it go away as well.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Hmmmm...I'm pretty sure there is some trick to getting rid of it because I know my old laptop did it, but I forget how I got rid of it. It's not a buzzing, it's whirring, it sounds like a quieter version of the noise an ipod makes if you turn on the clicker and scroll really quickly (on the ipod).christopher_wolf wrote:High pitched buzzing, eh? That is the sound I am talking about, then. It tends to sound different on different systems to different people.marlinspike wrote:[...]it's whirring, it sounds like a quieter version of the noise an ipod makes if you turn on the clicker and scroll really quickly (on the ipod).

I bought a used HP tablet (TC1100) and when it was on battery power, I heard that buzzing sound fairly loudly. It was just a touch louder than the hard drive itself! It is definately a distinct sound too. It isn't the fan, CDROM, hum of the monitor or the hard drive. I found a definate pattern to the sound too. It was an electrical sounding buzz that sounded pretty much after the CPU was just finished crunching on a process. Open a folder or window, BZZZ! Scroll a window up and down, BZZZZZZZ!
I contacted HP support about it and after 2 hours of HDD scans and software patches (which didn't help) they let me send it in for repair. They ended up putting in a new motherboard, and the sound is gone.
Funny thing is, I can hear the same sound in my T60. It has to be on battery power to hear it but it is nowhere as loud as it was on the HP tablet. (Thank goodness!)
I would say that if it gets abnormally loud, I would have the laptop serviced.
