Rescue and Recovery upgrade problems ...

#1 Post by ashleys » Thu Nov 09, 2006 8:50 am

Just a note that some weeks ago a I encountered a problem with upgrading RnR.

I'm on a T30 with W2K. All the up-to-date W2K fixes and current versions of ThinkPad software.

I was on RnR 3.01.0037 and took the upgrade package to RnR 3.01.0042. This package failed to apply with what appeared to be a packaging error.
As I had taken a complete system backup before the attempted upgrade, I restored just to be on the safe side.
I then used the complete install version of 3.01.042. This installed correctly but when attempting to boot after the upgrade it failed with the following STOP error (BSOD).
0x000000CE: DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATION
The driver mentioned was cdr4_w2k.SYS.
There was nothing wrong with this driver but something RnR was now doing caused the above error.

I restored the system (again) and then installed version 3.10.0017.
This install worked cleanly (full install) and I've had no problems with it since. I've tested the Windows component, the pre-desktop area and the stand-alone bootable copy on CD.

It should be noted that a T30 is not listed as a supported model for release 3.10.0017 but I suspect that it's just not been tested with that model.

Ps. Moral is *ALWAYS* take a backup before you attempt major component upgrades.
