Switches automatically from 800x600 to 1024x768

#1 Post by scslmd » Fri Nov 10, 2006 6:02 pm

I have a X41T that I carry from room to room. I set the "close lid" to "Do Nothing" under the advanced power options. However, whenever I re-open the lid, I can see that the monitor is temporarily at the "800 x 600" screen and then it switches back to the "1024 x 768" screen.

Normally this would not be an issues but Windows XP registers this and would change all the application windows to a 800x600 setting and leave it there even after it resets to the larger resolution. You can still work with the windows and expand it to the larger resolution but it can get very annoying doing that time after time. Is anyone else experiencing this and more importantly is there a setting that can allow me to disable the 800x600 resolution completely so it won't switch like that?

Thank you,

Steve

I think that I ran across this once myself and found it to be a conflict between the resolution settings in Windows and those for the Intel Graphics adapter.

Try this -- right-click on the desktop and choose > Properties > Settings > Advanced > and then choose the tab for the Intel Graphics Adapter settings. Poke around in the resultant dialog boxes and set the resolution for both internal and external video to your desired 1024 x 768 and see if that fixes it up.

I just tried that and even attached an external monitor to make sure it wasn't switching back and forth as you suggested. All the settings are set at 1024x768@16bits. When I close and open the lid, I can see that the "external" monitor is still at 1024x768 but the "internal" is set to 800x600 then immediately switches to 1024x768. I also played with the full/center/keep aspect ratio and that didn't make any difference either.

Any more ideas?!? It's annoying.

Two other things come to mind:

1. Do you use Lenovo's presentation director? If so, is there a conflicting setting in there?

2. All of my settings are 1024 x 768 @ 32 bits; yours are at 16 bits. Not sure if that matters, but...

Here is a report of my settings and info that was produced by the Intel Graphics Adapter control panel applet. Maybe you could compare with yours.

Yes, I'm using presentation manager. It is set to the same settings as the others. I also checked the information under the IGM Driver and it is almost exactly the same as what you listed with the exception of memory (more) and CPU speed (slightly faster but probably due to the CPU step). The rest of the software versions are exactly the same as yours.

One interesting note is that I tried to disable some services to see if there was anything to this and when I disabled Lenovo Power Manger, this problem disappeared. I re-enabled the Power Manager and the problem re-appeared.

Which power manager? There are 3:

1. IBM Power Manager Driver 1.13c
2. ThinkPad ACPI Power Management Driver 1.33
3. ThinkPad SATA Power Management Driver 1.03

If it's #1 then there are settings to determine the display refresh rate under certain conditions. You could experiment with those to see if they affect your issue.

I also note that there is a new BIOS (2.05) recently released that fixes a problem with icons on the desktop being rearranged when the LCD is opened/closed, and a new Display Driver to go with it. It's a long shot but perhaps upgrading these will also fix the problem that you're seeing.
