replacing Celeron-M with Centrino

#1 Post by ttan98 » Fri Nov 10, 2006 8:25 pm

This is a general question I hope those out there can help me.

As most poeple are aware that there are many laptops out there equipped with Celeron CPU. It is cheaper to replace these Celeron CPU with Centrino CPU than buying Centrino based laptop as there are many second centrino selling cheaply eg 1.6GHz @ 400Mhz.

Is is possible to replace this Celeron with Centrino type of processor? eg

Celeron-M with 725 Bania or 730 Dothan, if yes please supply details eg. spec no of Celeron that can be replaced.

Thanks in advance.

Celeron M and Pentium M's are pin-compatible.

Whether or not a swap will work is mostly based on whether the specific BIOS and Embedded Controller support the particular processor you want to install.

You will have to be much more specific about what you'd like to do, before anyone can provide a detailed answer.

On which mode or make of laptop?

I know people that have done it on some IBM R series and also HP's.

thanks for the reply fellows..

I am talking about the generic idea of swapping the CPU celeron with centrino...and it will work...and this will apply to all types of celeron laptops.

Looks like it is not so easy, I may have to change the bios and embedded code as well.

If I change the bios and embedded code using celeron and then swapping over to centrino and if it does not work due to say hardware incompatibility then I would have non working laptop, possibly I cannot change back...there you are. A risky business..

Are you talking about an IBM? If not update only the BIOS and try with the centrino, there is no risk.

Just the cost of the cpu. :)

In most cases, it's not an issue of a differentBIOS or EC, it whether or not the most current version for a machine support a Pentium M and which specific CPU's. By support, I mean properly recoginize, apply correct voltages and enable SpeedStep.

For some models, many in fact, the swap works flawlessly. However, some specific combinations or machines may be problematic.

I've done the Celeron M to Pentium M swap on two R51's and one R52. No issues.
