Motherboard upgrade

#1 Post by altair » Mon Nov 13, 2006 10:44 am

I need to replace the motherboard in my T40 due to a problem I posted about earlier. Instead of getting the same motherboard I can get a T41P motherboard with better video for a little more money. My question is will the T41P motherboard work with my T40 system? I have a 1.6 Pentium M and 512MB RAM that I want to keep (along with everything else that's left - 80GB HD, DVD+CDRW, several 75W power adapters).. will everything (hardware-wise) be compatible?

Thanks

Everything will work, but two notes.

The T40 usually came with PC2100. T41's came with PC2700 memory, which is slightly faster. Either will work, and no human can perceive the difference - I believe.

The T41p has a very high end graphics chipset which does require a better cooling fan. It's called the long fan assembly. For details, check the IBM Hardware Maint. Manual for the T4x's.

In general, many people have remarked about how HOT the T41p's ran. I had one briefly and will agree that it was uncomfortable on the lap. My T40 does not run anywhere near as hot.

Bottom line, more performance = more heat.

Thanks for the info. I've located the relevant info in the hardware manual (it is FRU 13R2657).

Will my existing T40 fan assembly physically fit this new motherboard? If so I might re-use it for a while and keep the video underclocked until I get the T41p fan assembly.

I have a T42p mobo in my T40, i believe that you will only need the fan if you run an intensive video game there is no risk in using the short fan for a few days until you get the long one.

I got my fan from ebay it is a M10 fan.

The original will fit and work, underclocking is a great idea until the new one arrives. Don't forget to use Arctic Silver on the CPU.

Good luck with the swap.
