Floppy version isn't an option as I don't have a floppy drive So, any opinions on Safe Mode? Better, worse, no diff? ...

I would advise you to find a FDD for this. It'll work up through T30s in the ultrabay 2000 and they're pretty inexpensive.

Not sure if they'll work in the T40s, T60s (you would need the fancy IBM cable). I'm going to try and verify this with my wife's T61.

Nothing like the ability to boot from a FDD!!!
