Upgrade T40 mini-pci wireless

#1 Post by leopard96 » Tue Nov 14, 2006 5:09 pm

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone attempted to upgrade the mini-pci wireless adapter in their T40? I have the Cisco Aironet a/b adapter but it does not support G, WPA2, etc. The type is 2374-CU2 if that helps.
I'm looking for something that is compatible with the existing antennae and supports newer wireless radio standards and authentication. Has anyone tried this and had success on T40's before?

Thanks!

I had a T40 with the Intel 2100b and replaced it with a Atheros a/b/g since the 2100 were unstable and didn't support a/g.

I would recommend to get a Atheros instead of a Intel if you are about to replace the Intel card. I tried several Intel cards and had problems with all of them, but the Atheros gave me no problem at all in my current T43p or my old T40.

There are several discussions on this board about wireless problems and a lot of them is related to Intel.

I'm looking for a b/g mini pci also for my T40 2373 14U. I'm using an atheros generic cardbus now and it works well in winxp. Has anyone found a generic that works without no-1802.com? Which one is better supported in linux? I run gentoo most of the time on my desktops, but I haven't installed on the T40 yet.

(Got a set of fresh recovery CD's from IBM, but I haven't tried them on the new hd yet...)

And Atheros cards, which have their own set of issues!

all right, so I have found the following on the lenovo site:

Part number: 73P4301 :: ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter II (US) :: $65

Part number: 41N2990 ::
Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Mini-PCI Adapter :: $59
(not recommended as far as I can tell)

Part number: 31P9701 :: ThinkPad a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter :: $99

which one do ppl get?
I assume eBay prices are lower, but I would like to select the right one first.

thanks in advance

If you enter your machine number on the Accessories page to find compatible accessories, all of the following are listed as compatible. You may need to update the BIOS if you are not using a recent version.

Compatible network adapters for a 2374-CU2

The following page shows that the 31P9701 is definitely compatible. 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI adapter - Overview

Note that the 41N2990 (Intel 2915) is not listed as compatible on this page. Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Mini-PCI Adapter - Overview

Nothing clear on the 73P4301. 11 A/B/G Wireless Lan MINI PCI Adapter II - Overview

To me, the only safe bet is the Part number: 31P9701 :: ThinkPad a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter :: $99

None the less, at least one ThinkPad.com user seems to have one working satisfactorily in a T40.

I appears you are fortunate to have this forum so that things that are unclear on Lenovo's site can be cleared up here. The personal experience of other forum members indicate all three will work. :D
