T20 and 80 GB HDD - only 64 GB useable?

#1 Post by egibbs » Tue Aug 31, 2004 10:11 am

Hi, probably a stupid question but I'm being blonde toady.

I just installed the 80 GB 5400 RPM drive in my T20, and I was only able to partition and format the first 64 GB - the rest shows as unusable space.

Is there a 64 GB limitation on HDD size for the T20? If so why does IBM list the 80 GB drive as compatible with the T20?

I assume once I get Partition Magic loaded up I'll be able to at least create a second partition with the unusable space - or will I?

No, but did you use FDISK? FDISK has one.

Fdisk Does Not Recognize Full Size of Hard Disks Larger than 64 GB

Yes, you need to patch FDISK if you're using Win98/SE, although if this is the problem, it should be reporting about 16 Mb (?)

Hmmm...

I'm using XP Pro, but it's an upgrade copy so before doing a clean install I recovered Win98 with the original recovery CD.

My guess is it's a variant of the FDISK problem - but as you said all the info on old FDISK says is should report 80 GB minus 64 MB.

To make matters wors I've already spent 2 days loading stuff on and setting it up like I want, and I can't find my Partition Magic CD...:-(

I think I'll image it before I start mucking around with the partitons. Hate to have to do it all over again.
