Edgy Eft woes 8(

#1 Post by Turbo Audi » Wed Nov 15, 2006 12:39 pm

A few months ago I installed Dapper on my desktop as well as IBM T60. On both machines I have yet to have a single problem...Until I upgraded to mega-buggy Edgy. I updated via command line on both machines after the "final" release date. I love Firefox 2.0 and GAIM beta4 etc. However, on my T60, under the pointer there is a 1 inch or so line, that follows wherever the mouse goes. I tried changing pointers to no avail. 3ddesk no longer works on either machine. (not a big deal but I did spend some time configing it). Screen savers on both machines do not work. I read/reported various bugs on Launchpad.net.
I will wipe my XP partition on my desktop (along with 6.10) and put a fresh install of 6.01.1.
Anyone else see any odd bugs with Eft. I'm sure they will be resolved, but the little things is drives me crazy sometimes. Anyone think I should keep my XP partition on my T60? I never really boot into Windows, I think I am ready for a full switch to Ubuntu Linux. Any thoughts?

Never use the upgrade with Ubuntu, always do a clean install. Causes a lot of bugs. I suggest bug reporting it on Launchpad, the developers have already fixed a lot of bugs concerning this.

I did a clean install of Edgy myself and it runs perfectly.

I have had a devil of a time with my upgrade from Dapper to Edgy (on my desktop). It took at least 4 tries of "update" and "upgrade" to get most everything to work, then it wiped out my KDE, which left me at just the command line (no GUI). Finally got everything working again, but there are still lots of bugs.

I have successfully made the jump from XP to Linux, but it is so time consuming to keep everything "working" in linux.....I will be switching over to OS X soon. With all the favorable results of fellow forum members installing OS X in their T60p's and X60s machines, I think I will make the jump soon.

Interesting Spif, a clean install would be better it seems. I was going to DL the .iso DD 6.06.1, but since you mention 6.10 as a good way of dealing with this, perhaps I will DL that .iso.

Is there a 6.10.1 coming out any time soon does anyone know?

Neo, it seems everything is working well with Edgy for you now. Are you happy with it, or will you try re-installing (again) with a new .iso? (or go back to Dapper?)

I am interested to look into a new Eft .iso install.

I doubt it.

Since Dapper is Canonical's first Long Term Release, it needs to work for everyone out of box. The reason 6.06.1 was created was due to some people having problems with the installer, and it was widespread enough that Canonical decided new iso's were needed to solve this.

They only release security enhancements and close vulnerabilities after the distribution is done. Dapper was simply a special case where patching was really, really needed.

Wiped my XP partition on my desktop and installed a fresh .iso of 6.10. Transferred MP3s and .docs, set up everything and it works great. No bugs as of yet. This week I am going to wipe my XP Pro partition off my T60 and go full Linux 24/7. Running 4 OSs its a pain because I never know what .doc is on what OS. (When I rarely boot into XP).
