Soon to own a 2623D6U

I was doing my research on it and noticed it said the x1300 video card was a PCI-E

My question is exactly how big of a pain in the [censored] would it be ot upgrade this in the future? I'm aware it's not going to be as easy as popping open a cover and pulling one thing out and replacing it with another, but from what I have read it's possible.

Anyone here been ballsy enough to try it?

I am positively sure upgrade the video card is impossible, at least that's the case in a thinkpad.

Ok.. no problems.. This machine will be great anyways Can't wait to get it.

Also, if anyone can offer me some pointers etc on tweaking and making the machine perform its best I would appreciate it. I have never even touched a thinkpad before, but everyone I know swears by them and I sell a buttload of them. I'm computer savvy, and know enough to get rid of alot of the crap software that is pre installed such as symantec av etc.

probably not the answer you want, but... do a search, or read through the forum. that sort of thing has been discussed ad nauseum on this board. there's some good info here from really knowledgeable people.

Yes, definately read back through this conference, what I do is get rid of the stuff immediately I don't want (from experience). Use it for a while and decide what works for you and what you really don't need.

But there are post's on back that nail this topic down very well. Including such favorites as.... to "repartition or not to repartition that is the question"..........."is crapware all that crappy" ........."ahh symantec...I knew it well" ......and "where or where has my HPA gone"........"is that a blue tooth mouse in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me" (just kidding a bit here).

Will do.. I'm just stoked to be getting my first TP. It's at the sort facility now, should be delivered soon soon soon This is going to be the longest day at work. I've got a fair idea of what software is going (symantec is first, ive had some horrible experiences with their poor product). I'm like a little kid on christmas... and no, thats not a bluetooth mouse in my pocket, but im not so sure im happy to see you either...

I know how you feel, I have had my t60 for a while now and it is a great machine. There is a list a ways back of the software and configurations I use on mine, but it really is all relative to what you use it for.

I have had one for a while. I put in the 2gb memory otherwise not as fast as you would think. The other issue is that the DVD's tend to drop and skip on battery power especially. You need to disable a hotkey in the ATI startup to fix it. I forget the one exactly but look it up in the subjucts on this site, that's how I fixwd mine, sent 2 back before I realized they were all the same.

I too have just ordered a 2623D6U.

Originally I was considering the cheapo model with the Intel graphics but I decided I'd prefer the ATi - I have ATi cards (9600XT's) in both my desktop machines, so I ordered the 2623DAU.

I changed my order to the D6U over the DAU because it has a DVD-recorder, and becuase of the smaller (but higher resolution) screen, since I intend to use the laptop more on the road than at home, and the smaller unit should get better battery time and be easier to use in small places like airplanes.

I am hoping I won't regret passing up the XGA 15" for the SXGA+ 14" screen. (the graphics card on both models is the X1300.)

One thing I'll likely upgrade pretty quick after I get it is the RAM, so I'm hoping this forum will help steer me in the right direction on that.

This looks like a very informative forum and I'm sure I'll be checking back here often after I get my new toy!

ok, so I get my new notebook. I go home, I plug it in, power it up...


Spent 5 minutes converting the file system from fat32 to ntfs..

Then the 20 minutes of registration and stuff, I finally got to see my desktop (woo hoo). I set most of the stuff up the way I liked it. I have to say its a great machine. I unfortunately didn't have alot of time to fool withit last night, but so far I am really impressed, just in the physical feel of the machine and the way it performs. REally quiet, not very loud. Really happy.

I'm slightly disappointed that it did not come with a Vista Upgrade coupon or however they are handling it, but not a huge issue as I wasn't planning on upgrading immediately. I can get a (legit) copy of it most likely for free or close to it, so im not sweating it. Would be nice, but oh well.

One confusing thing. I pull up the application that reads you speeds and feeds in the machine such as temp. Everything was dead on as far as memory installed, processor speed, where the temp should be etc except one thing.

Listed video memory as X1300 256MB. I thought it was only 64? What am I missing? Is it sharing the remaining 192 with ram or pagefile?

Other than that, I so far love the machine. The battery had a 97% charge on it, and is almost everything I expected. Oh, and while i dont know what brand the keyboard was, it had a nice sturdy feel and made the clicky sound/feel, not that it matters to me alot.

Are you saying you speant 5 minutes converting to NTFS or the computer automatically did it while you waited? Cause...they do it automatically.

On the Vista upgrade, do you have a Vista capable sticker on your palmrest?

And yeah, it pulls the extra 192 from the ram

yes, has a vista logo on it, even had a sheet in there in 45 different languages with some vista disclaimer...
