its to do with the back up, the sytem back is one the hard drive but where is this alllocated, i cant find where all the gigs have gone.

how do i go abt getting these gigs back ??

Rapid Restore does take up some drive space. On the other hand, might be wise to have a backup. You can backup on to an external drive or burn to cd/dvd to save space. If you want to keep a backup on the local disk then you could delete some backups (I think by default Rapid Restore creates 5 incremental backups, so you could keep just the latest one). To do that follow this thread:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ing+backup

Or if you wish, get rid of the Restore program and backups and use something else- Acronis TrueImage creates a disk image as well and works well.

I rather like the Restore program - it has saved my hide a few times.

Go to Control Pannel and open up Add/Remove Programs and at the top right corner of that window from the drop down menu, choose to sort by Size instead of Name. Now this will show you how much space you Software programs are taking up. The IBM Rapid Restore, was/is an optional software by default on my T40, and seeing that I never choose to install it, I have no idea where it might be excpet try "Thinkpad Software Installer" under the Access IBM menu in your Programs menu. One more think try running disk cleanup, which is located in your System Tools menu under Accessories in your Programs menu.

Imran,

Start>Programs>Access IBM>IBM Rapid Restore

Make sure you have the latest version.

I'm puzzled that it takes up so much space if you've never used it.

the space is taken up by another partition and it is hidden from windows so you can't see it in My Computer. You can remove the partition and free up your disk space by using a program such as partition magic. I just made recovery cd's and deleted this partition. 13 GB does seem a little excessive for this partition, mine was 4GB. XP will take some space and some of the IBM utilities too, but 13 GB seems high.

Hope this helps,

I did this a year ago with my T41, and don't remember the details. But there was a remove program for the Rapid Restore, and it undid the hidden partition without requiring additional software.

It ran for several hours. There was also something to change in the BIOS which made the hidden partition visible again.

Sorry this is so vague, but I hope it helps you know what you're looking for.
