R51 Dead... 4 short beeps

#1 Post by adxG » Thu Nov 16, 2006 12:26 am

This is my first post and I would like to say Hi! to all.

The problem:

My R51 won't boot at all and left me with a blank dead screen. The only thing that make me believe it's still alive is 4 short beeps and then...silent. I've check the manual and the closest meaning for that beep is System Board (security chip). But the manual said it should be 4 cycle of 4 short beeps where mine is only 1 time of 4 short beeps. I've been searching the forum but can't find any thread about this. Currently, it's naked in front of me as I've remove the bezel and noticed that the fan still spinning, so is the HDD. Took out the CMOS battery and put it back but still the same. Any advice? Btw, what's the security chip and which one is it?

Thanks.

EDIT: Following the service manual. Took out all the internal/external device attached. Result:

- Got 1-3-3-1 beep - DIMM / System Board (according to manual)

Put in RAM:

- 1-3-3-1 beep gone but got the previous 4 beeps.

So, does this mean my DIMM is ok? If yes, then it's system board or LCD. Right?

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

I wouldn't try to remove the Security chip as that will intentionally break both the operation of the planar and the chip itself as a security measure. Did you try testing the DIMMs one by one and listening for a change in the beep code?

At this point, I would be leaning towards the problem having to do with the system board.

Thanks.

I'll test the RAM on other laptop but right now I don't have that one with me. Will get it back this weekend. I hope it's just the RAM
