T41 vs T42

#1 Post by EdDotNet » Tue Aug 31, 2004 2:51 pm

I want to buy a light, powerful laptop. I currently have an older IBM workhorse, the A20p, which I love but is on its last legs.

This will mostly be for development work (Visual Studio.NET) but it will also be a primary computer, so decent graphics / media capabilities would be nice.

Since I favor portability, I think a 14.1" model would be best for me. Can someone tell me what the major differences are between T41 and T42 models (other than price)? It seems to me that a T41 is a good value right now, but I would like to be able to use this laptop for at least 2 or 3 years.

Thanks
Ed

For what its worth, I am extremely happy with my T41 I bought brand new on ebay, with the 1.7GHZ CPU and SXGA+ screen...Got it as an open-bay model for $1299 with 3 years warranty.

To be frank, I don't notice any difference between this and the R50 I had with a 1.4GHZ CPU, so I don't know how much difference the faster CPU on the T42 will make...

Anyways!!

good luck.

Is the T42 basically just a faster (processor) T41?

the T42 uses the newer, faster Dothan Centrino chips that also consume less power.

Oh I see, a better chipset

That might be a selling point for me. Thanks for the info.

It seems that the 42's are a bit heavier from looking at tabook.pdf, but on many spec sites on IBM and elsewhere, they seem to be the same. Any thoughts on that?

Nope, they are the same. My T40 and T42 are virturally identical from the outside and they seem to be the same weight.

IIRC, another difference is that the T41's use the titanium alloy upper casing while the T42's use magnesium alloy casing. IIRC, Titanium has better absolute strength while magnesium has a better strength-to-weight/volume/cost ratio.

can someone explain in plain English (so even I can understand :-) ) what the difference is between "absolute strength and better strength-to-weight/volume"?

Kinda long, but here's a comparision between steel and titanium for sword making that illustrates the difference:

GREAT ARTICLE!!! based on what I read then, magnesium is BETTER for a laptop, because for equal weight (and lighter IS important in a laptop) it gives you better strength then titanium...
