XP 'hangs' at Welcome screen
XP 'hangs' at Welcome screen
T42: My bootup seems to hang at the XP Welcome screen. I ran bootvis and found that the Logon+Service init takes almost 2 mins. How can I go into detail to figure out what's causing this?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Does it do the same when you boot it into Safe Mode?
The init processes should clear within a few seconds; if they don't, it usually means they are waiting for some resources, network, hardware, etc, to pop up and that isn't happening.
Does it do the same thing regardless of a live network connection or not?

That's my guess. Any idea how to check out what's happening? I did find a MS solution (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816873/en-us) but it didn't work for me.christopher_wolf wrote:The init processes should clear within a few seconds; if they don't, it usually means they are waiting for some resources, network, hardware, etc, to pop up and that isn't happening.
I use a DSL connection so I have to 'dial up' each time I bootup. So I guess I don't have a live connection.christopher_wolf wrote:Does it do the same thing regardless of a live network connection or not?

If it's doing the same whilst booting in Safe mode, then it suggests a hardware failure.

Yeah, that has been the case whenever I have seen an older system, particularly a laptop, hang on the Welcome screen. Happened three times to 2 HPs and a Compaq of mine.
I would see if the OP could check the SMART attributes as well.
