NAS solution ?
Hi,
I've ordered a thinkpad but I have about four extra 250gb drives (2 Sata, 2 Pata, I think) in my desktop computer that I could go on using as NAS.
I've looked at the Buffalo TeraStation, but it's always sold with drives, never without HDDs.
There's also the Netgear SC101, which ships without drives and fits two 3.5" drives. However, it requires some kind of software to be installed on the client side which I don't want.
So, any suggestions on consumer priced NAS servers which are sold without drives and fit SATA/PATA drives ??
thanks,

Re: NAS solution ?
You can turn your desktop into a NAS device reasonably easily. This has been discussed in depth previously here on ThinkPads.com, so try searching on NAS and SAN.awallin wrote:I've ordered a thinkpad but I have about four extra 250gb drives (2 Sata, 2 Pata, I think) in my desktop computer that I could go on using as NAS.
Whatever you do, don't get a Netgear SC101. It is not well regarded as a NAS solution for a variety of hardware and software reasons.
[Edited to fix my poor grammar)
Cheers,
Bill

There is this article at PC Magazine on building a do-it-yourself NAS using a "spare" computer and free software. I have NOT tried it; it was just something I remember reading a few months ago.

You absolutely do not want want a Netgear SC101. I just had a customer with one of those and it is a piece of cr*p! Actually the hardware is not too bad but the required software is a joke!
I have successfully used NasLite http://www.serverelements.com/ for three years now without incident. There is a free version that runs from a floppy and it turns and old pc into a hard drive attached to an ethernet cable. No software needs to be installed on your computer and it works with any operating system.
