T60P Memory Parity Error while running on battery

I just received my T60P yesterday and was pretty excited while setting it up, etc.., Waited until the battery was fully charged before I decided to pull out the AC cord. Much to my dismay, after only a few seconds do I get the BSOD with the following error:

*** Hardware Malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support

NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error

*** The system has halted ***

After several attempts running it, I tested it while running with the AC plugged in and it ran fine. As soon as I pull out the AC, within 10 seconds, I'll get the BSOD again.

My config is: T60P(2.33GHz) 2.01 BIOS, 2 x 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, 9cell battery, WinXP Pro

I called up Lenovo today and this system is getting picked up tomorrow and I had to reorder a brand new system, but unfortunately, I have to wait 5 weeks now. The only good thing now is that I get a coupon to get a free upgrade to Vista Business.

Has this happened to anyone else?

It's due to your graphics driver. Are you using Omega or sth? If you are, change to default Ibm then it's alright

How would I find out my current graphics driver? I think it's ATI (although this may be the card, rather than the driver). Then, how would I change it over the the IBM driver?

You can check in your display settings. But if the the machine is brand new and you haven't done anything to it, it should be alright except that they might have a defective memory module in it. But since you can get a replacement, it's still best to go with that option. I had the same problem last time while using Omega graphics driver and it happens every single time until I uninstalled it.

I dont know if you still have the laptop or not, but you might want to run memtest86 first to see if it is one of your sticks. If you do a search on the internet, you should be able to find where to download it.

Hey Peter,

I have the exact same problem - it took me a while to realize the correlation with batter power, but it's 100% - my system is rock solid on AC.

I thought it might be powerplay, but turning that off didn't solve it.

FYI, I'm running IBM display drivers on a clean (non-IBM) XP Pro install. I did install the system update modules, so I'm not sure what else could be the problem. Maybe the ACPI drivers??

Hope someone solves this one soon... I love my new T60p otherwise.

try to upgrade ur BIOS, and try it again.
ohterwise, try to use different memory instead of ur original 2 G.
you are living in bayarea, I think you can bring to local repair center to check it, it is much better than send to them. I am living in san francisco, and I got my lcd replaced in downtown.

New BIOS didn't help.

The original 512MB that came with my machine had the same problem. The 2G I have now isn't IBM, but memtest etc have no problem with it.

Hmm, well, I've got on-site service, so I guess it's time to make them work for me...

Did you try updating the BIOS to the new 2.03 version? or the 2.01 version? I'm reading more about this same problem everyday (and it's usually withe the T60P). When did you receive your laptop? I wound up returning mine back to Lenovo and having to reorder it. Hopefully, the new one doesn't arrive with the same problem - it'll be kinda wasteful.

I tried BIOS 2.03, no change. I haven't tried 2.01, but it doesn't seem to be available for download

I'm about to wipe the system to factory as the last thing I do before calling support...

I ordered on Nov 4, got it maybe a 1.5 weeks later...

Mine used to fault with the 2.01 BIOS. I was hoping that the 2.03 BIOS would've fixed the problems. Also sounds like we received our laptops around the same time. There are others who received their T60Ps around the same time as well, with the same problems.

Please post your progress as to what you find out. I'm really curious as to why this is happening.

Try reseating the sodimm in it's socket. I was getting parity errors on my t60p for the first couple of days until I reseated it. Haven't had a parity error since. I also received my t60p around 11/16. What is the type and model of your tp?

I've had the exact same problems as well. I actually made a thread a couple of days ago on that issue as well. Mine however was inconsistent with the AC or battery. I would have it plugged in and it would crap out for no apperant reason. I upgraded to the latest BIOS, and haven't seen an issue yet, but its' only been a couple of days. As for it being a video driver problem, I am skeptical on that. Since I got my laptop I immediately nuked the system, and installed a fresh XP Pro, and put the Omega drivers. Anyway, good luck dude.

Ok, they replaced my motherboard yesterday and... it still blue-screens

So either the HW is randomly flawed and I'm 0/2, or the T60p's are systematically flawed.

At this point, I'm at a loss for what to do, other than return the laptop. Any ideas?

thinkpod, sorry to hear about your laptop not working after the motherboard replacement. Did they try diagnosing other parts of the system? Sometimes, they have to swap out a few things before they truly figure out the faulty part. But it is really annoying.

I'm awaiting my new laptop (replacement to 1st faulty T60(p)) to arrive within the next couple of weeks, and I have a hunch that it's going to have the same problem. I'm not as patient with new items and if it's faulty, I'm sending it back and just buying a different brand altogether - but that's just me. I've got too many other things to do.

Let us know what you do.

Looks like there is a new BIOS posted today for the T60(p). Give that a try, some of the readme looks like it may help.

Plain and simple, the T60 is not fond of running dual channel memory - if you want to have 2*1gb, then its really the hit'n'miss approach to getting it to work.

All i can say is that we pay top dollar for our Thinkpads and shouldnt accept ANY issues like this. If i was still under my initial 30 days, and got ONE BSOD, i would return it immediately and order another one. I had a bunch of issues with my t60p. IBM replaced both 1gb chips. The i sent it in AGAIN, to have motherboard replaced, b/c machine was running SUPER hot. Hasnt frozen a single time since i got it back the last time. That was over 3 weeks ago, and i use it all day/night. Good luck.

The newest bios's from 2.04 to 2.06 were mentioned as fixing the powerplay ati v5200 related crashing problems. Did these ever "resolve" the problem?

I think it's unlikely that they are systemically flawed else I and many others would be having the same problem and I think it's unlikely that you got a second bad motherboard. There is something else wrong with you t60p and at this point I would request that they replace the laptop as it is just barely 1 month old. If support at Lenovo refuses then politely escallate to customer relations.

Agreed. Send it back. Dont bother, or you might end up with a machine that has problems for the next 3 years....
