Vista RTM on T42P

#1 Post by RMD » Thu Nov 16, 2006 12:19 pm

I spent some time reading through the various posts that mentioned running Vista on a T42P, but I still have a few questions.

I understand that Vista will likely run fine on my T42P, despite the apparent lack of Vista-specific drivers from Lenovo.

What I'm worried about are things like the trackpoint, the volume controls, and F-key functionality like shutting off the screen, turning the wireless on/off, etc.

Do these kinds of things work on Vista?

Also, does anybody know if Lenovo will release drivers for the T42P's various components in the future?

Lenovo has released drivers for many of the devices:

Although Lenovo hasn't released a HotKey applet for Vista, the XP version works fine except for turning off the Wireless which requires some customization in the driver that isn't even in the Lenovo-released wireless driver for Vista. However, Vista does have a remote center (I think that's what it's called) in Control Panel that will allow you to turn the Wireless on or off easily although not as easily as the Fn+F5 arrangement. The HotKey will turn on the magnification, etc of the screen.

So far as I am aware, there is no Access Connections, Fingerprint Software, or Client Security Software for Vista. There's also no driver for the Verizon WAN card.

The RTM of Vista is available for download by enterprise customers on the M$ Volume Licensing site. I got my company's copy and have a DVD so I can try RTM Vista Business on my T60p over the weekend. I'll post a mini-review of any significant differences from RC2.

Thanks for the response and the link.

From what I can tell, the T42p isn't listed anywhere on that page. I assume, however, that many of the devices in later models are identical to their T42p counterparts, and therefore the drivers on that page will work for the T42p as well. Is that correct?

I take it that the "HotKey applet" is the application responsible for enabling features like Fn+F3 (turn off the screen)? If so, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

I'm planning on downloading Vista Ultimate RTM from MSDN as soon as its available (probably sometime after tonight at 3am EST) and will let everybody know how well it goes on my T42P.

Thanks for your help.

My company has an MSDN subscription, which is handled through one of the management staff, however he has only provided physically shipped media. Are there different levels of MSDN subscriptions?

Yes, there are, but if you get the physical media you should also have access to the entire library online at msdn.microsoft.com.

You'll need to obtain the login from whomever manages it.

I have a T42, and I installed Vista beta. See the thread I started on it with my experiences: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=29529

I just got home where I have RC1 waiting for me (since I ordered RC1, RC2, and RTM have come out - oh well).

My school has a MSDNAA subscription, but Vista is not showing in there selection. Is it possible to login msdn.microsoft.com with my credentials to download Vista?

I'm honestly not sure. I have an MSDN Universal subscription and Vista appeared on that at around 10:30 PM EST last night.

Alas, I'll be away all weekend so I won't be able to install it until Sunday. :(

Ah, thanks for the link.

You mentioned that Fn+F3 didn't work. Did you ever resolve that issue?

Not that I recall. I haven't booted up into Vista in a couple of weeks. Next time I give it a whirl it will be with RC1.
