Installing new OS, I press "any key"and nothing

#1 Post by dbeltr1 » Thu Nov 16, 2006 4:56 pm

I obtained a larger hard drive (went from 6 GB to 20 GB) for my TP 600 2645-85U and wanting do to a clean install, i swiped the hard drives, put in my XP Pro install cd, pressed "any key" to boot from CD and...nothing. The screen just sits there with the message. I had booted from the cd before. I tried using other cds to boot and same result. I checked the setup for boot sequence and CD is the first one. I ran the test in the setup screen and everything is okay. BIOS is up-to-date. Memory is maxed out.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thank you much.

If you can't boot from CD I would try to boot from a floppy first and then start XP setup from there... that wouldn't really solve the problem, though, but if you don't boot often from CD (I don't) it wouldn't really matter.

I got the six disks from Microsoft, double checked the boot sequence, attached the external floppy (I had my WinXP setup disk in the CD drive), and would you believe it loaded from the CD...either way, it installed just fine from the CD. Thanks for the advice. Had I not prepared the 6 floppy disks, I wouldn't have tried booting with the floppy.

Possible difference with the boot sequence between the attached floppy drive versus not being attached? Weird thing is, i had installed an OS without the floppy drive attached. Go figure. It worked nevertheless.

Thanks again
