UPGRADE: Using a IBM (Hitachi) Hard drive

#1 Post by fillstar » Thu Nov 16, 2006 10:06 pm

Hey guys,

After filtering through a ton of coverage regading the Hitachi 7.2K RPM hard drive upgrades that are very popular I was worried with the amount of fiddling required to get it working.

I am very un-technical so all of those firmwares and imaging and swapping is a bit too much. I was wondering whether a hard drive upgrade purchased from the IBM site will guarantee plug-and-play.
I heard the hard drive of the same spec is actually the Hitachi drive itself but easier to install cause of some setting??? I know its substantially more expensive but I honestly CBF with the work to get it working.

I want a clean start by installing the recovery disks on this new hard drive (which should work once installed) and use the old 30GB 4200rpm for a USB drive or Ultrabay etc.

In conclusion... will a hard drive purchased straight off IBM work straight out of the pakage by simplying isntalling it?

Thanks guys!

The Hitachi 7K100 works right out of the box. I did that upgrade two days ago on my T41p.

IBM TP T41p (1.7G/1GB/100GB-7k100/DVD-CDRW/SXGA+/BT)
IBM TP T22 (900/512/40/DVD/CDRW/14")
IBM TP A31 (1.8GHz/512MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/15" SXGA)
For sale: n/a
WTB: n/a

I think it is only the T43's that complain about a non-IBM dirve.
The rest of the T4x series is cool with just about any drive.

More and more people are making the change to 7K100 series! I've mine too installed just yesterday.

Do you have a clicking sound in your 7K100 (when just surfing, the disk should be idle, but makes a tick, tick, tick..)
