DVD ROM acting up..

#1 Post by arield » Fri Nov 17, 2006 5:56 pm

Hello,

I have just bought a second hand T23. With it I received a Toshiba SD-C2512 DVD ROM.

I just noticed that for some reason it reads DVDs but not CDs with data. It grunts for a while but then says it can not recognise the media and that it may be corrupt. The same CD reads nicely on my desktop PC.

I have searched the web for hints but to no avail so far.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Ariel

My understanding is that DVD/CD combo drives actually use two different laser pickups. It's possible that the laser for the CD is defective or there is some contamination on the lens which prevents the laser from reading the CD properly. If you are sure that ALL of your CDs cannot be read by this drive, then I would take a cotton swab with just a little isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on it and clean the lens on the pickup carriage. Be GENTLE with the swab.

If this doesn't fix your problem, then maybe you can upgrade to a CDRW/DVD burner?

Are you talking about CD's you've burned? All of the older ThinkPad DVD drives I've used will not read CD's that I've burned. That includes the DVD-multi drives.

Ah, I missed that part on the first read-through. Yes, it's possible that CD-R (and more so for CD-RW) disks will not read in the early generation drives. I just checked the specs for this particular drive and it appears that it should support both CD-R and CD-RW:

Hello guys.
Thanks for the fast response.

It reads neither burned nor orginal CDs.

I tried to swab it with some alcohol but it didn't help either, I'm afraid.

Could it be a configuration or driver issue?

Thanks again.

Ariel

Doubtful that you have any software problems (that I am aware of) which could cause your laptop to read DVDs but not CDs. Most likely I would say that there is a hardware issue with your drive. Is it possible that you can swap drives with another system (i.e. put your drive in another laptop and see what happens and/or put another DVD or CD drive in your system)?
