A couple questions about buying a ThinkPad from Lenovo

#1 Post by Tab » Fri Nov 17, 2006 8:02 pm

1) How build to order is Lenovo? Years ago when I ordered my current TP, I was told there would be delays because someone would have to open the box my TP was in and add the options I wanted (more memory, etc.). Which options still cause delays like that?

2) Is the only way to return a TP with an unacceptable-to-me LCD is through some force majeure such as the credit card return policy?

3) Is it still possible to get the recovery CDs for free within 30 days of delivery?

Thanks!

1.) CTO takes awhile, as do models that aren't in heavy demand. Any of the Express models should ship quickly and easily, although you would have to ask the rep about a particular model you want to order and they should give you an estimated ship date along with information about any back orders for parts. If you want them to add memory, upgrade the HDD, then that still has the probability of taking longer than would the same model being shipped without the upgrades.

2.) That is a little extreme; should a problem arise with, say, the LCD (a critical subject to many users), then you should call them up right away and explain clearly why you do not feel as if you got what you paid for or how it would impede your use of the Thinkpad. Returns within that period can be handled on a case by case basis.

3.)It has traditionally depended on what the rep you get decides. If you have gotten into a jam early on and blew away the RnR HPA, they usually send out the disks free of charge. Otherwise, they woud expect you to make them yourself in a few days after you get your Thinkpad.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Thanks, it does help. Can one make the recovery CDs using a USB CD/DVD burner? I'm looking at getting an X (no optical).
