Legal issue opinion; XP COA, want to install W2k

#1 Post by zone » Sat Nov 18, 2006 3:05 pm

Hi

I have *new* X31 with Win XP COA sticker, however I prefer Win 2000 over XP. In the sense if XP is NT5.1 and W2k NT5.0 installing of Win 2000 can be perceived technically as downgrading, regarding XP license is that OK. Or is it legal to run W2k on XP COA system. Also what are implications of such move regarding IBM warranty?

If you obtained your copy of Win2K legally, then it's fine. For example, if you bought it at a store and are going to install it only on this laptop, it's legal. Or, if you have a site license for it at work/school, then it's also legal.

If you computer has an XP XOA, then you can only install a OEM copy of XP legally. You cannot use a retail version and use that key, it won't work. I have seen COA's with both a 2000 and XP key. If that is the case, you can install 2000 using that key (must be OEM copy). Otherwise you will need to obtain a legal 2000 key in order to install Windows 2000.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
